I use Plex all the time, but tbh I'm probably not using it to it's full potential. That being said, I can't resist a VPN derived lifetime access offer!

Not even gonna pretend I figured all this out. All the credit goes to user merb0786 on HUKD.

    https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/plex-pass-lifetime-account-via-argentina-see-op-for-instructions-4558653

    About this deal

With the pending increase for Plex Pass from April 29th, there is currently a method available which allows you to sign-up to Plex Lifetime via Argentina VPN for just £29.11. Use a Revolut / Fee Free Card for this price - will be slightly higher if using a normal Visa etc.

I made use of Urban VPN - which is free on Chrome. See instructions below, took me a few minutes.

    4558653_1.jpg

    Instructions:

    1. Activate a VPN located in Argentina
Connect to a server in Argentina using your VPN provider - (HolaVPN, Tunnelbear, UrbanVPN etc).

    2. Go to the official Plex website
Go to plex.tv and click on your profile icon (top right corner), then select "Account Settings."

    3. Click on "Become a Premium Member."
In the subscriptions section, click the option to become a premium member.

    4558653_1.jpg

    4. Select the Lifetime option (39483 ARS)
This is the reduced price that appears when the website detects that you are in Argentina.

    4558653_1.jpg

FOLLOW THESE REMAINING STEPS EXACTLY AS INSTRUCTED:

    5. Enter Payment Details
Fill out the form with your credit card. Select any Postal Code in Argentina , for example: X5001FBD. Make sure you select UK as the Country at this stage (Don't worry if the price is displayed in GBP - there is a trick to follow next).

    6. Check the captcha
Complete the first captcha that will normally appear in the bottom right.

    4558653_1.jpg

    7. Click on "Continue to Summary"
A second captcha will appear - It is important here that you DO NOT confirm this captcha yet.

    8. Change the country back to Argentina
Change the billing country back to Argentina on the payment form and the price in GBP will change to ARS.

    9. Confirm the final captcha
Once the country is configured correctly, complete the captcha and continue with the payment process. Once it is all paid for, use as normal without VPN.

    For those that don't know….

    What is Plex?
Plex is a platform that lets you organise, stream, and access your personal media (movies, TV shows, music) from a computer or server, and also offers free, ad-supported streaming of movies, TV shows, and live TV channels

This allows you to put all of your favourite TV shows, movies, music that you've ripped onto your computer, server or NAS and stream them from anywhere in your house - just like Netflix, but you own everything that you put onto it. This makes managing media and sharing so much easier.

    - Premium music features in Plexamp, like Sonic Analysis, Sonic Sage, Guest DJ, Track & Album Radio, Artist & Album Mix Builders, and more.
    -

when transcoding, to help preserve colors for playback.
Get early preview access to new apps and features.

Removing Playback Limitations from Mobile Apps

As mentioned above, our mobile apps offer in-app purchases that activate/unlock the app to remove playback limitations when streaming from a Plex Media Server:

    - Android and iOS mobile apps offer one-time, in-app purchases.
    - Again, a Plex Pass subscription will activate these features without additional purchase

Savage good value. I paid approx. 90€ and i believe that was a good deal. this is exceptional.

If you think you would like to host your own media server at home, now or in the future this is a good investment.

I always thought Plex was just for streaming my own media and had no real interest, but have recently learned it has its own channels/sources. What is it like for content?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,819 ✭✭✭Xterminator

Plex live TV and video on demand has ads. There are over 90 channels in my plex feed, with a fair few movies - over a thousand easily. But this is not a premium feature so you can access without plex pass. Plex pass does not remove the live tv ads.

I like the true crime channels with murder documentaries, etc. They have a lot of classic movies, eg the quiet man, and a lot of pre 2000 movies and some more modern ones - there is a 2019 movie in the 1st line of my feed. It does box sets too.

I like the recommendations and custom feeds like the remembering gene hackman suggestions line that is new. You can tell it any subscriptions you have, EG Netflix and prime, and if you look up a movie it lets you know where it is available - including your own library if you have a plex server.

Oh, and trailers. It does trailers - where available. Handy feature!

If someone has IPTV do they need rhis? Never understood the value of plex !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,940 ✭✭✭The_B_Man

Well it depends if you want your own personal Netflix and Spotify, or if you want to pay someone for the IPTV subscription to do all the work adding new content.

Other benefits are the app is built into a lot of smart TVs so you can watch on phone, tablet, TV at the same time.

Also, since you control the content, you can put on whatever you want. Maybe some 80s TV show that isn't on IPTV but you want to watch, then throw it on Plex and you're good to go. You can share it with family and friends as well. Same for any home movies, or music or anything.

But really you need to see if its worth it. It'll cost you about 3 years worth of an IPTV sub to get going, if you don't already have a home server setup, whether its a PC or raspberry pi or whatever. You can run it on a laptop but it'll need to be turned on for other people to use the app, hence why you basically need a home server, and you also might find it tedious spending time finding all the latest content to put on it.

Depends on the person. If you like tinkering with tech, then it's a good project. If you're not that technical, I wouldn't bother.

Brillant stuff, many thanks, I stopped checkinfg HUKD as most of them obviously UK and/or Amazon (dont have prime)

I was just in the middle of planning to try and use Jellyfin and/or Kodi to see how much different it is from Plex (with bells and whistles)

Using phone credit that was over, but now I will likely switch that to getting Office and Onedrive storage instead (mostly office as the cloud is just a go between for getting pics/vids off phone onto pc)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,819 ✭✭✭Xterminator

I use Plex for home hosting. Some of my stuff is of the hard to find nature. Other are complete collections all in one place. Then see how you can that share that with family and friends!

Anyone who has ever struggled to find a show they want to watch will know that pain. Usually the popular stuff is easy enough, but try finding less popular/older shows and movies. Missing episodes…. etc.

I also have other IP services.

So i download content, store it somewhere and then use plex to access it ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 391 ✭✭selephonic

One other thing is that you can host all your music on your plex server and stream through their PlexAmp app on your devices, like a self-hosted spotify. It has some nice auto DJ and can make good suggestions along with static and smart playlists. It has AI features implemented (though you need to subscribe to OpenAI for these)

If you have a TVHeadend server, you can also get that working under Live TV on Plex too, although it takes a bit of tinkering.

As The_B_Man said, if you enjoy playing with these kind of things, you can get a great service set up. For me, its absolutely invaluable.

Do you not find it very low?

I bluetooth from my pixel to my car and have to use the booster Musicolet and it helps, but nothing in PlexAmp did the same

I don't find an issue with volume compared to any other player. If you have an EQ enabled in settings, it may have the preamp gain set low. There's other settings there for preamp gain, a limiter and loudness levelling.

When it comes to content, Stremio with a debrid account is better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,949 ✭✭✭jeffk

I must go out in the car and have a play again and see

Then the next snag be mobile data coverage, go back to my usb stick lol

Yes you need a server, which effectively means a computer that you don't turn off.

I have a €70 raspberry pi connected to my router under the stairs and that does the job perfectly. Uses very little electricity. I can stream HD films anywhere in the world. Or at least anywhere I've tried.

Also, yes you need to add your own content so you'll have to buy a harddrive. I have a 1tb hard (not an SSD) and it works fine.

I'm a computer programmer so i find it very simple to setup so it's a no-brainer for me. I use my server for other stuff so Plex is just something else i run on it.

Once it's setup, there's minimal maintenance. You just have to add content. I know people who find that so tedious that they'd rather just pay the sub, which is fair enough.

I had a read on HUKD and it's mentioned that remote streaming will be pass only from April.

If that's true and like me you share libraries with friends then it will be a must!

how did you get around the card mismatch errors? revolut card is irish. they are looking for arg card. thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,700 ✭✭✭savemejebus

Best advice is just follow steps 6 to 9 very carefully. You'll have to click the verify capcha in the bottom right twice.

First time you click it with your payment details and Ireland in the country box. Then you need to click 'continue to summary'. Another capcha appears in the bottom right, before you click this capcha you need to go back and change Ireland to Argentina in the country box, and only then click the capcha.

Worked for me, thanks for the guide!

Massive thanks for this!! I was going to be buying a lifetime pass this week before they hike it up to €250. I had been on yearly until now. Note for anyone trying this, it doesn't seem to work if you have a current active subscription, I had to log into another account I had that I never had a plex pass for

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,088 ✭✭✭Soarer

    Thanks for that.

Didn't realise about the active sub. I didn't have one so didn't notice.

Delighted you saved a few quid. That's what this place is all about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,694 ✭✭✭Sup08

Thanks OP. Tried a few times and found selecting Ireland as the first country worked. Would not work using United Kingdom.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 391 ✭✭selephonic

If you mean over the air broadcast, then technically yes, but there are easier and better ways to do that. Currently I have a decoder each for DVB-T and DVB-S2 going into a mini PC server that has TVHeadend running. That can serve out over the network to Kodi or other TVHeadend clients, and over the internet using external access and port forwarding. I do have plex fooled into seeing it but its not completely reliable and there are issues with TV Guide and stability.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,088 ✭✭✭Soarer

Yeah, apologies. Took the guide from HUKD and forgot to mention to change to Ireland. As long as you're sorted now though…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 854 ✭✭✭spuddy

If you run a plex server, you can stream using the app to a chromecast, without it costing you a cent. What benefit of PlexPass am I not seeing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,694 ✭✭✭Sup08

for me it's future updates/changes and remote access to your server library for all users in your account, AFAIK

    here's the comparison from plex.

    https://support.plex.tv/articles/202526943-plex-free-vs-paid/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 401 ✭✭tagoona

Probably a decade ago, I bought a lifetime subscription to plex.

Plex then changed what the lifetime subscription applied to. I've seen several companies offer lifetime stuff then change what that applies to. I'll never believe a company or trust them not to move the goalposts again.

If you get a year out of this be happy, but expect to be disappointed in the future.
