Hi all - has anyone received queries from revenue through their portal to submit dependant relatives form and employing a carer form after submitting your annual return on the portal? Is this normal or anything trigerred them? Also has anyone had a similiar experience? They havn't released my statement of liabilities yet?

Perfectly normal for Revenue to query tax claims all the time. Did your correspondence advise if it was a compliance intervention? You just need to upload your forms confirming you meet the eligibility of the credits/reliefs you claimed. You may be asked to provide proofs of the claims such as showing you are maintaining the relative and employing a carer based on invoices form the company or showing your payroll submissions if employing the carer directly.

Thanks for the prompt response. No, they didn’t mention that it is a compliance intervention. I was actually waiting for my Statement of Liability (SOL) and, after waiting three weeks, I called them. They asked if I had received any queries, and I said no. The lady then said she would send it in the afternoon.

Yes, I have filled out both forms (Dependent Relatives and Employing a Carer). For Dependent Relatives, if they request more information, I can provide my bank statements for monthly payments. However, for Employing a Carer, we just hired a local lady in our home country and pay her monthly without an invoice as its not required there. My question is, if Revenue decides I am not eligible for this credit due to the lack of an invoice or any other reason, will they simply refuse this credit and issue the SOL without it, or will they scrutinize this further?

    Thanks

If you don't meet the criteria for the credit/relief claimed then it will not be granted and your statement of liabilities issued. You should be informed of Revenues decision when they review what you submit.

Brilliant. Totally understand, and I really appreciate it. I was very tense and thought they might investigate further. I believe this happens when you don't have a full understanding of local taxes. I wasn't clear on the Employing a Carer tax credit from the start, as there is very limited information available on the Revenue website, but I applied to see if I was eligible. Now let's see, and even if they refuse, I am happy as I need my SOL as soon as possible for the mortgage switch.

Just for future reference; a tax return is legal declaration that all your income has been declared both PAYE and non PAYE. It's also a legal declaration that you understood and meet the criteria for any credits/reliefs you are claiming for. The tax system is self assessed system; ie the obligation is on you to ensure you are compliant. If you have queries on whether you meet the criteria of something, you send a query to Revenue before you submit your tax return.

Thanks. It’s clear. Somehow I have submitted but you are right I should have asked in advance.
