Driving licence numbers will be added to new and renewed car insurance policy information from the end of March, Gardai will have access to this extra info, my question is, I have a learner permit and my own car insurance policy which is due to expire in September, will the Gardai know if my licence is a learner permit with out stopping me? my test is the end of March this year, Insurance company have not asked me for licence number. Car is fully insured, Taxed, new NCT, is in great condition etc etc.

The requirement to provide your driver number to your insurer comes into effect on 31st March. The requirement is only when renewing a policy or taking out a new policy. Therefore you will only have to provide your driver number to your insurer when you renew in September.

If you pass your test at the end of March, then you'll have a driver number to give to your insurance company.

If you don't pass your test, then you won't, but you should have a licensed driver with you.....

What exactly is your question?

Maybe the answer is just too obvious.

AGS will know you are driving on a learner permit because they will observe your L plates before stopping you.

They already have all that info on the registered owner by just running the reg.

And presumably you had to send a copy of your permit to your insurance when you took it out, so they already have your driver number from that.

they’ll ask you to show your licence, if you say it’s not with you, you’ll be asked to produce at a station.

Look, OP, worst case scenario the car is seized and you get a €160 fine + 2 points. With a couple of weeks til your test either bring an accomp with you going forward or hope you don’t run into any gardai.

That is not a Herculean task anyway.

No. I have never been asked for a driver number. After all, the requirement only becomes compulsory after 31st March

Thought insurance companies ask for a photo (front and back) of your drivers licence.

Open to correction though as it's been a good few years since I've needed to change insurer.

If you've never had to send them a copy of your licence up to now you've been lucky, every policy I've taken out within the last few years always requires a copy of all associated driver licenses front and back to be submitted within a time frame or it's cancelled.

If you have submitted the licence and they're still asking you for a driver number then they're just too lazy to pull it from all the licenses.

The thousands of learner permit holders that cancel tests and then are able to renew their learner permit.

Anpr is being expanded greatly and registration numbers will connect to insurance which will connect to driver number which will tell gardai who is insured to drive the vehicle.

I am talking about law in the Motoring forum in regards provisional license.

There are people who are driving on provisional over 40 years on their own, no L plates.

There is no enforcement of motoring law in this context.

That's way too low a penalty. Learner permit should be automatically cancelled and them banned from reapplying for a period of time.
