Manned mission to Mars under Trump?

Would the US under Trump really be ready for a manned mission to Mars? We'd be talking about a time before 2028, if that's what Trump would have suggested during his inaugural speech.

Or is this all a Musk - Space X dream?

The moon is 384,400 km away. I doubt we'll even see that.

As a comparison, Mars is 135,000,000 km away.

No. You only get one shot every two years so they would need to do it in 2027 without any kind of trial run or testing. It's an absolute pipe dream.

I've had exactly the same thought. Once every two years the distance would be shorter, hence that cycle and that date.

We are hundred years minimum away from even thinking about it.

At our current abilities the shortest trip is 9 months which means if the crew encounter any issues they are on the own, no rescue. Any return to Earth would take 3 years (given cosmic realignment)

So in reality a manned mission to Mars using our current propulsion methods would be a one way trip.

It's a bit like the male contraceptive pill, a flurry of news stories every few years but we never seem to get any nearer to it actually happening…

In fairness getting to the moon is difficult but achievable, it's a local area body that's always a consistent distance from Earth. Mars on the other hand is a Planet that can be on the opposite side of the sun at it's furthest, a distance that's just too far with current tech. Realistically we shouldn't be aiming for Mars at all yet, it's extremely risky, there's no rescue if something goes wrong and the distances are too great. We need to master colonising the Moon first, Once we have that THEN we have a base from which to work towards interplanetary travel.
