    Hi all,

I plan to try some beach casting. I know nothing about it except what I read on line. Whiting or Bass would be my preference. What rod, reel, gut, bait etc would I need? Any suggestions where to fish within a reasonable distance from Cork city? My budget is approx €160. Thanks.

160 euro is not a lot for beach fishing. If you want to whip that lead out as far as possible then you need a good rod.

I'm a big fan of the Shakespeare Salt/Agility range as they are excellent value for money. This one in the FS Surf model for €100 would be ideal. You could pair it with something like this reel in a 6000 size for €50.

You can make up your own rigs, but probably handier to buy a few first for learning. Something like this should do the trick. You'll need a few grip weights also, around 5oz weight should do.

Bait wise, lugworm are great for bass and general beach fishing. Also, you don't need to cast very far for bass as they are usually in around the breaking waves in the shallow water. Night time fishing is usually better also.

As always, YouTube is a great resource for research and learning. Hope this helps!

    Hi dmc17,

Thanks very much for the helpful info. You made it simple & easy but very informative. The Slaney Fishing shop looks quite good. I plan to purchase in the next few weeks so I'll probably be back with more questions.

    Thanks again and much appreciated.

No worries at all. The guy that runs that shop used to be quite active on here under the name ardinn, but doesn't seem to have been on much recently. There are loads of great Irish tackle shops to be fair, both online and physical which is great.
