I’m new here and new to target shooting , when it comes to gun safes will they look for the bs BS7558 cert ? The reason I ask is because that’s the type of thing I can make in work but obviously would not have a cert to say it meets the standards, but I could easily over spec it and make it above them standards.. would that be acceptable when the Garda come to check on it !!

The wording of the law for a single gun safe:

"Each firearm shall be stored securely in a gun safe which complies with BS 7558 and which shall be securely fixed to a solid structure."

So if you can make a gun safe that complies with bs7558, or exceeds it, and can prove that to the satisfaction of your crime prevention officer who will come out and check it them you are good.

Before you fab it up I'd have a chat to your firearms officer or local sergeant/district to get contact details for your cpo and have a chat with them to see would a fabbed up safe to spec would be acceptable.

Statutory Instrument No: 307 relies on British Standard 7558 “Specification for gun cabinets”, an extremely outdated standard from 1992.

BS7558 refers to a “cabinet” not a “safe”, which can be as light as a 2 mm sheet steel construction, and quite unbelievably, can even be secured by padlock. Additionally, what constitutes a secure “gun cabinet” to 

BS7558 relies on subjective judgement rather than an accredited certification. 

Just reading around on it and it dose not even seem to be a real standard that is certified, but knowing how hard it can be to get a gun license it might be just easier to buy one and not give them an excuse.

It is a real standard, not a particularly high one but it is what ags chose as the minimum.

I'd recommend chatting to your cpo and seeing which they'd accept, you may not have the option to make your own if they wouldn't accept an uncertified, but gun safes aren't wildly expensive either(depending on size that is).

Cheers for the help , it’s at least worth asking them the question , ah it was not really about saving money more just about maken a nice fitted one into an opening that i have , so custom made would of being nice and slick looking .

I wouldn't see it as an issue. Most safes i have seen don't even have a manufacturers name or sticker on them. Just a metal box with a lock.

I think a custom one made to fit would be acceptable so long as its secured well, out of sight and has a double lock. Asking the FO before hand I would assume will have the answer "no".

Once fitted they will come out to visit and once done right it should be fine. also try fit locks so door cant be jimmied open

Biggest issue would be if was made with bird-**** welding and looked like a piece of scrap metal built by a blind apprentice

I know of 1 gun safe that was branded, it was just a 12" filing cabinet with a desk drawer style lock, FO was fine with it surprisingly. I wouldn't store my condoms in it

god no this would be made top quality, I’m a fully qualified sheet metal worker who then moved onto cad design engineer, so this type of thing would be my bread and butter.
