Do part time roles exist for entrants in Public Service? ?

Due to Disability or Caring duties? Is registering on Public Jobs.ie the best bet and applying job by job or is there some generalised application process? Like an aptitude test or other?

    Advice appreciated.

    Thanks

I've never seen part times roles advertised for the Civil Service, always full time.

But once in, you can apply to work share (I think you have to wait until probation is finished).

However, it's not a guarantee it will be granted. Like many other things in the CS, (flexi, shorter working year, WFH) work sharing is a privilege, not an entitlement.

I believe that they are not advertised as such as Ezeoul says but they can be applied for but only as a Clerical Officer (CO) I believe. I think that your best bet is to call Public Jobs and ask them as they might have better, and crucially, more recent information for you as they are trying to make the CS/PS more accessible and inclusive.

One of my colleagues is a CO and he is a carer and so works only Tue-Thu so it is possible but yes you might need to wait until you have passed probation, I am not sure.

Yes, registering on Public Jobs and signinig up for alerts for your preferred search parameters is your best bet although there will also sometime externally advertised campaigns too. Do a search of boards for the various grades or organisations and you will find that many of these have their own threads which have loads of information in them on the whole process and how long it takes. It is important to check for the rough dates that the last campaigns were advertised as they are often at the same time each year so you need to make sure you are ready in time.

Also, be prepared that unless you do really well with your application form and aptitude tests then your position could be over a thousand down the list and it can take months to even over a year to be called for interview and offered a place, especially if you are applying for outside of Dublin where there are far fewer vacancies.

is it the case for all public service clerical jobs there was a campaign for in 2024 which created a panel which is still been worked on so there are no general jobs available presently unless your on the 2024 list ??

    Nope.

Any civil servant can apply for worksharing (which can be a number of patterns) at any grade. I know APs who workshare, but can't think of any POs.

I myself have worked various patterns over the years, including mornings only, and/or a four day week.

Worksharing is not confined only to clerical officers.

I have seen a good few part-time jobs in public service (note, not civil service) advertise. Many smaller orgs / agencies etc conly need people 3 days a week sometimes. Universities and Education roles are often funding dependent too and may be 0.5 or 0..6FTE Keep an eye on public jobs
