Sean Meehan built a log cabin on his own land but the council decided he didn't have permission. He's been having a stand off with the council for a while now to the point he's ended up in court and a judge has issued a bench warrant for his arrest. This is very bizzare to me that it's ended up going this far. Are councils really that strict?

Either someone complained or his mistake was applying for retention.

Councils do nothing unless they have to they don't go around looking for caravans or log cabins.

If he did nothing I suspect he'd be in no bother at all.

Once you apply for retention after the fact for the dwelling you are taking the piss and the council will probably say no on principle.

Wake me up when it's all over.

He should take a leaf out of the meath couple's book and appeal the decision ad infinitum

Bit of charity required from the Judge here.

In a few months he probably won't need planning permission.

Should have deferred it until the summer.

I’m not sure this structure would pass under the new regulations - I believe it’s built on agricultural land for starters- I do feel for the guy I really do - this was apparently his only option for somewhere to live -while id like to see his case resolved in some way to his satisfaction not sure we want ramshackle buildings all over the countryside either - it looks like every second back garden will have a wooden air B&B in a few years time

I'm no legal expert but I know that you don't ignore a court order. Enoch Burke might disagree.

He was on the radio the day before and said he was to appear in court the following day. And was prepared to go to jail.

Apparently he bought the agricultural land after selling the marital home following a separation with his wife. He then put a Mobile home on it without planning permission, and later clad it in timer to make it look like a log cabin.

As someone who was also turned down for planning permission a few years ago, I have some idea how he felt, ( I appreciate it was under different circumstances), however that what the planning laws are there for. He was refused retention, and also turn down by ABP, and looks like was badly advised by his solicitor. I do have some sympathy for him. But I'm also of the opinion that you can't have a situation where people can have a carte blanche to put a dwelling anywhere they like.

To the best of my knowledge this wouldn't come under the new proposed change to planning, as it wouldn't be part of an existing dwelling.

Bet there is something we are not being told.

Always more to these stories than just "poor innocent man" being picked on.

I doubt it. If you apply for retention for a dwelling built with out PP that isn't even up to any building standard acceptable to the planning authority you are going to get a refusal.

Wake me up when it's all over.
