Issue with window and door installers

    Hi all,

I wont name the company but I have to get some advice.

I paid large deposit for door and windows, paid off 4k of the 6k and they fitted the door, with the windows being fitted on full payment.

They sent a guy to replace the door. Worker proceeded to take a hammer to the glass windows to the sides of the door (full height single pane glass x 2) and smashed the glass all over my drive and pebbled front of my house. At the time, I thought it was the done thing. It's only the fact my neighbor said a day later what on earth was happening that I realized maybe this wasn't industry standard. He swept up what he could and left. I was a bit taken aback. I told then when they called about the windows that it really was really odd. They said that they hired a few people in during a busy time and that all their people are now very professional. I told them that I'm still picking out glass from my drive.

Today, they rang me to say it was "time to pay for the windows" without any mention of the previous sh!tshow. I told them I have no faith in their workers carrying out any further work until this was addressed. They also said I can pay in full or I'd lose the deposit and they'll resell the windows. I completely lost my cool and told them that I'm still picking up glass from the pebbles and I had cut my foot last summer on the glass and they have not addressed any of the issues I raised previous. I told them that surely from an operations and Health and Safety point of view that what happened was really poor .

Surely there are certain standards for operating a door or window replacement? Am I being unreasonable?

I have seen that done once on a large front window which wasn't coming out without a fight. It was a single-pane and the builder took a significant amount of time to protect the area and then clean up. It actually split into three pieces and didn't fragment.

Anyway, no I don't think that you're being unreasonable given the circumstances of the condition of the driveway. That's a plainly stupid way of removing glass as you then have to deal with the shards and such left in the frame making the job harder.

I'd follow the call up with an email stating your concerns (ref prev issue) and that you'll be happy to pay the balance once they confirm that the issues highlighted were directly addressed with the staff. Otherwise you won't be in a position to allow their staff to access the property due to their lack of H&S. And reselling the windows… they don't want to do that, they are most likely custom-made.

Like what 10-10-20 said i was thinking it was an issue getting the window out that lead to the way it was handled in the 1st instance .

Anyway I'm not sure what you are looking to gain here if you have a clear outcome that works for you tell them at least clear and direct outcomes can be come to then ,I'm not defending them but just don't know what you want to happen here or gain? Maybe I'm reading it wrong but you complained and they acknowledged issue with staff and all should be corrected now ,follow on now to when they want to complete the order and you brought the issue up looking for what outcome ? remember the person on the line is just an office staff person ,more than likely, and losing it with them or vice versa them losing it with you should not be on. its knocking out some doors and windows there is an element of brute force needed at times

They are refusing to acknowledge the issue and keep pressing me for payment or they will start charging me storage. The service is absolutely shocking.

On the phone they keep saying they'll speak to management and then in the subsequent correspondence, they do not acknowledge the issue.

They said that they hired a few people in during a busy time and that all their people are now very professional.

but they did,it may not be a great response but it was a response, I'll point to my previous post above , what are you looking to gain or achieve be clear on that at least then an outcome that works for you may be achievable ?

No mention of the quality of the doors or windows. I'd like a lovely tidy install, but if they install quality components, and they work after installation, then the 'mess' they make is really a secondary issue. But that's just me!. I have no issue taking out the hoover and the brush/pan to tidy up after a trades person leaves.

We have loose stones and pebbles on a half of the drive. Glass was smashed into this area. No amount of picking and brushing is clearing it out.

To acknowledge the fact that it was not a good job, ensure that it doesn't happen with the windows and at least partially pay for the fact that I have to remove that stonework and replace it.

so you are looking for compensation ,at any point in time glass bottles , mirrors, car windows etc for whatever reason could break in the pebble ,how would you deal with that ? margins are probably low enough for the installer so compensation is a very tricky and sticky subject, did you give them a figure to to clean /remove/replace ,why didn't you ask them back to clean it up ,it was last summer from the above ? you still haven't addressed if you where happy with the actual installed items so can only assume no issues of note ?

If I'm at fault, I'd pay for the replacement of the stone myself. If I hire a company to come onto my property and do a job, I'd expect them to break the glass with some sort of way to prevent glass going anywhere.

The installation was rough around the edges and plasterwork has fallen away.

Still avoiding the substantive question : what is the quality of the final product?

I'm not disagreeing with you ,I'd be pissed myself but some people get led by anger and expect unreasonable or over the top outcomes , take a step back ,be clear, calm, concise reasonable and collected on what you would like to happen and be prepared to compromise. If its a case of paying in full on some guarantees so be it . I've no skin in this industry but I believe margins are low and it was nearly a race to the bottom.(this i really dont know tbh ) Sometimes you just have to cut your small loss and get someone to rectify issues ,you see it all the time ,it shouldn't happen but unfortunately it does.
