Valentines day

Being single and never in a relationship on valentines day, I have no idea what the story is with it.

I heard them talking about it today on radio, they said 200 euro is what is usually spent on the gifts for your other half on the day.

I always thought the day is a gimmick and I wouldn't buy into it even if in a relationship, why not just get gifts and do romantic things all throughout the year? I have seen men go all out on valentines day but fight like cats and dogs the rest of the year with their partner.

Next issue is from listening to the radio, it seems that its just the men that buy the gifts? is that right? bit unfair if true.

I've got my husband a nice Valentine card and a box of chocolates. Twenty quid max.

And we ARE romantic and we always celebrate Valentine's Day!

We've decided to have a nice night in with lovely food.

Look on the bright side. It's the only day us obsessive stalkers can get away with it. Any other day our anonymous cards and flowers get barring orders rather than "Ahh, that's lovely"

well a healthy relationship would certainly have romance, love, etc more often than once a year. It is a bit of a Hallmark Holiday to be fair but there’s no harm in it either.

As going back to the original pagan and or spiritual origins of seasonal holidays is in Vogue maybe sacrifice a few goats to the old gods of love.

Basically a card and a bunch of roses , maybe chocolates is the normal . Unless it's something special like a birthday or baby it's generally accepted as a BS day . It' is worth going to dunnes / tesco in the morning to see panicked men buying stuff

BS day but all the restaurants will be booked out this weekend.

Yeah I remember being parked outside tesco one valentines day, all the men walking out with bunches of flowers, sheep.

I can understand making a big deal out of it for a new girlfriend . But for most older long term couples it's nice for the children to make a deal out of it . Like Mothers day .

Good to hear that some women buy presents as well as receive them.

It’s nice to have one special day in the year for couples to celebrate their love through romantic dates, loving messages and gifts.

Always wondered why Ireland doesn’t have an official St. Valentine’s Day festival to celebrate sweethearts and couples when there are some of his remains buried in Whitefriar Street church in Dublin - can be a busy place on the 14th. Some info on how some of Valentine’s remains ended up here are on myirishjeweler.com

    edit: can’t post a link 🤷‍♀️

[urgh I can't help it sorry]

    UMM actually

    that's a pic of a crocus

Valentines day is such a marketing nonsense. Probably the cause of many resentments or disagreements between couples because they don't speak honestly about their expectations!

I'd agree that it's nicer to have spontaneous romantic gestures or gifts throughout the year rather than a disappointing bouquet and middle of the road chocolates as a box-ticking exercise

Some people have wild expectations though, I'd say €200 is well up there for a yearly gift on top of xmas and birthdays!

Side point, I've never wanted valentine's gifts, and been very clear about that with anyone i've been seeing around that time. They'd still buy something - too afraid of the cultural 'joke' around

"Oh she said not to get her anything? It's a traaapppppppp!"

When my kids were kids we'd make a big fuss of them, with cake for breakfast and a small plant or something that would be kept precious for a couple of weeks then inevitably die in the corner from over watering or under caring

No kids at home now to make a fuss of but maybe I'll have some cake for breakfast anyway seeing as it's a Friday

I, personally, am a big fan of it. Mainly because it’s the easiest “event” day. There’s a, pretty, straightforward formula.

I’ll be picking up a box of something in Ladurée, or from Hotel Chocolat, their champagne truffles are always a hit. After that it’s just a matter of grabbing the flowers and card.

Won’t be going out this year so will see if there’s a present I can spot while I’m out and about.

Being single and never in a relationship on valentines day

    Epic dodging.

Every Feb 13th. "It's not you it's me - I think we should see other people"

I don't like it at all as a day, herself does, I'll get her a card, cook a nice steak dinner for us both and she gets to pick whatever cheesy romantic movie that she wants that 364 days of the year there'd be no chance of me every watching.

Nice and simple with no stress or big expense.

I was actually with someone like that, break ups before events like that, Christmas, birthdays as well.

It's for brand new relationships and kids imo.

Were the flowers for the sheep? Or were they buying flowers because they now have sheep so the flowers are like an apology or something? Since when did Tesco start selling sheep? Or did they bring the sheep with them?

    Lots of questions.

I’d actually forgotten that Hotel Chocolat is closed, Dundrum too, so Ladurée it was. Only the bubbly left to pick up!

Happy Valentines, to all who celebrate!

Ive started spending the money I'd spend on flowers from a florist and buying a voucher for a nice garden centre, we get a half a day out, she gets a lot more flowers that last a long longer

Valentine's day is a foreign concept to be as a life long loner. As foreign as First communion to a Jewish person.

I'm a popular guy. I received 20 cards in the letter box this morning. All from the MILF's on the street. Obviously I was with them all before but it's nice that they make the effort. Let's me know I can keep inviting them around for a good time anytime I feel like it.

Number 1 rule of Valentine's day is DO NOT go out for dinner

To this day I'm still shocked. Many years ago(over 25) I went to dinner with my then girlfriend on valentines day. We had the meal and it was nice but they made us share the dessert. I still think about it. What the hell was that about. In my defence I was young and wouldn't stand for it now. Odd indeed.

Worrying the amount of people who feel they have to get expensive chocolates etc a poster above talking about champagne truffles, feck off, ! 😅. I got a card and chocolates in dealz for 4quid and if the woman moans then show them the door.
