    Hi,

Would anyone recognise the make/model of this boiler? It could be original to the house eg 40yrs old. It rus on gasoil.

Asking as I am trying to get info on the efficiency- been told I need a boiler of > 86% efficiency before OSS can install external insulation.

Last fill of oil was 280ltrs gave a total run time of 151hrs.. avg 1.85ltrs/hr

I guess I would need to know the KW output of the boiler to start the calcs?

    Tnx

Could it be an old Unidaire boiler? My in-laws had one that looked similar. It was an oil + open fire back boiler from the 70s when the house was built. They only replaced it about 6/7 years ago. Unidare was in Finglas, factory closed years ago.

By whom? (sounds like something a heat pump salesman, sorry expert, would say)

How did you measure the 'run time'. Is it boiler the on time (i.e. heating on time) or burner burn time?

Also, how are you planning on calculating the delivered energy (heat)?

Btw, I would be amazed if the efficiency of that boiler was 75%, never mind 86% (and that's not taking distribution inefficiencies into account).

Googled a few Unidaire boilers, hard to know if it's the same. Wil clean it down and see if there's a stamp on it

The OSS was quoting for insulation wrap and told me I wudn't qualify for grant unless boiler was >86%. €900 to come out and do a heat energy assessment first. Likely trying to upsell a new heat pump. At some stage boiler will be upgraded but keeping the heat in the house is my first priority.

151 hours is on time not burn time. The climote unit logs the hours. For the next fill of oil I'll out a CT clamp on the boiler and see exactly what the duty cycle is

Ah yes, the grant gold rush madness. Should have known!

I use an hour meter wired across the burner circuit to measure burn time. Simple, accurate and cheap as chips.

I'm still, though, confused how you plan on calculating your boiler efficiency? Maybe you could elaborate?

Without a test cert a default efficiency will have to be used based on the year the house was built. A calculated efficiency by yourself won't cut it I'm afraid.

I'm no expert in oil boilers but a quick visit to an Irish manufacturer website shows they have boilers up to 97% efficiency.

That could a few quid on oil per year at less assumed install cost than a heat pump.
