Hypothetical question - in between cars

I have a full Irish drivers license for 20 years and never involved in a crash, zero points, never had a claim, full NCD protect on my premium etc, current premium is valid until end of August
Hypothetical question: If I was to sell my current car privately and not buy the replacement car for a week or a few weeks (e.g time to find right car etc, may find the right one in a week or could be 5 weeks)

How does this work insurance wise? Do I have to suspend the insurance after selling my car until I find the right new car, I think I read something before about some time limit on this suspension that can disturb things

I'm in that situation now, my car is sold and gone but haven't got my new one yet, my policy is still in place and I haven't told anyone.

I should have new one soon, so I'll be about 2 months between cars with same policy on old car until I tell them

I don't know to be honest, I'm paying them for nothing though now, about 35 euro a month. They are risk free at the moment

You have a current policy covering a vehicle you no longer own. You could find yourself involved in a claim, should the new owner's policy be defective in any way. Regardless of that, the subject matter of the policy, the car, has been sold and you are obliged under contract to advise your insurers. If you think you can still use your driving of other cars extension, you are wrong. Why the reluctance to advise your insurer? They will usually suspend cover and allow a credit

I am the OP, so if I sell my car, I should tell insurance company it is sold, fair enough.

But is there some time limit as to when I should buy a new car from an insurance point of view?

(I think I rad somewhere you cant leave too long in between cars on a live policy as something may happen with your policy)

The policy can remain suspended until the end of its term at which point you would be entitled to a pro-rata refund from the insurer based on the time the policy was suspended. You NCD stays live for up to 2 years when it's not being used ie if you don't have a car.

Ring your insurance company and tell them. They use a shared database so the new person will have insured the car and they will know should anything go wrong with either you or the new owner

Thanks, must have been this 2 year thing I heard about the time limit.

So another thing, My wife has her own car and I am a named driver on my wife's insurance policy. If I was to suspend my policy whilst looking for a new car, can I even be named on her policy and drive her car.

Yes, you'd be fully covered to drive her car if your own policy is suspended, once you are named on her policy.

Op here again about 6 months later. I sold my car and suspended my insurance. This insurance expires on 19th August. I was owner of car and main driver on policy.

If I don’t buy a replacement car between now and 19th August, how does insurance work.

Your wife should call her insurer to check that.

I would have thought it unusual that a named driver has to have a policy in their own name.

I am not actually sure on this. I thought you needed to have your own policy to be a named driver on another but I could have it all wrong.

If my insurance expires on the 19th August, I basically uninsured. Is there a certain time period I have to get a new policy on after this does not mess up my perfect No claims discount etc.

I am down as a named driver on my wife’s policy. I think they may have asked her at time if I had my own car and policy etc and me being added to the policy may have been based on this. But not sure.
