I enjoy the retro-futuristic vibes. I'm assuming that, at least initially, this is set in a different universe than the rest of the MCU? That in itself is a huge boon imo.

I suppose the more blue, the higher in rank?

I like the suits, maybe the blue could be a little darker, but it is Disney/Marvel, in the summer, so it is family film ready.

    The Baxter Building looks CLASS

I was sold on the worldbuilding (even if 1950s America was never that diverse and shouldn't get a pass) but as soon as the Silver Surfer appeared, I just remembered how very done I am with superhero movies.

    Yay!!…more marvel shite?

That movie looks, sounds and feels awful. The aesthetic looks nice, reminds me of Fallout, but it begins to grate as soon as a CGI super hero appears. I notice the new Superman trailer has this kinda sheen off it too.

"even if 1950s America was never that diverse and shouldn't get a pass"

It's literally set in an alternate universe. It's not 1950's America, it's 1950's America in an alternate reality.

How is this shtick still a thing? I thought it became parody years ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,187 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

A film about a magic stretchy man, one made of rocks, another who can fly and turn into a flame and a woman who can turn invisible. Some non white people in it....totally unrealistic!!!! Too diverse! Lol

Ah in fairness they have been pulling back a bit on the volume of stuff they are pumping out. 2024 was very quiet I think one film? Two live action and two animated TV shows.

So far this year I thought Daredevil born again and friendly neighbourhood Spiderman were both excellent.

They lost me when the female silver surfer appeared

    Ugh ffs

I never read the comics, nor have I watched any of the other (3?) films but I do like the look of this one and will go see it.

I like the marketing of Galactus at least, and I have my ticket booked on day one because of it, just to witness that spectacle alone. As a comic book fan it's the type of thing you hope to see in live action one day.

Hopefully it lives up to my expectation. I don't usually mind wonky CGI in the MCU (nothing compared to wonky storytelling), but it will be unforgivable if they cheap out here.

Its supposed to be very woke, Mr Fantastic does not wear the pants in the relationship it seems.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,173 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Thatsa bingo folks, took a few months but theres the obligatory "very woke" comment in an MCU movie thread.

Sometimes its saved until day of first trailer or day of release but this was a wild one out of the blue!

I wanted to see Norrin Radd that I grew up watching/reading as the Silver Surfer not this obscure variant crap

But this is Disney, I shouldn't be surprised

It's probably cause that version's already been done in a movie that bombed.

They're already rebooting the F4 themselves, and Galactus (after that cloud abomination), so I can totally understand the desire to try to differentiate further from the 2007 iteration.

Its not out of the blue, there were test screenings of the film and the ending has been reshot as it was so bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,868 ✭✭✭Bacchus

Are you aware is there a direct correlation to it "being woke" and the ending being bad? Without any of us having seen it, it feels like you are conflating the two.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 17,150 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

There is a direct correlation, I have read reports of the screenings, its all over the internet.

The last 20 minutes has been completely reshot and they have reshot other scenes earlier in the film too.

Hopefully the final product is better than the one that they screened.

Here are some comments from the actors involved:

Kirby discusses Sue Storm’s portrayal in the 1960s and gender politics

“If you played an exact ’60s Sue today, everyone would think she was a bit of a doormat. So figuring out how to capture the essence of what she represented to each generation, where the gender politics were different, and embody that today, was one of the greatest joys of this.

I’ve always been really interested in the mess of femininity, and how can you be both? How can you be all the things? Not just the tough, invincible, powerful woman, but also a mother who gives birth, which is itself a superhero act. I love that these characters are real humans in a messy family who argue and try to work it out and get things wrong.”

Joseph Quinn mentions his kinder, gentler, less womanizing version of the Johnny Storm character.

He’s a man that leads with a lot of bravado, which can be an affront sometimes. But also he’s funny,” Quinn says. “Myself and [Marvel Studios boss] Kevin [Feige] were speaking about previous iterations of him and where we are culturally. He was branded as this womanizing, devil-may-care guy, but is that sexy these days? I don’t think so. This version of Johnny is less callous with other people’s feelings, and hopefully there’s a self-awareness about what’s driving that attention-seeking behavior.”

While I haven't dug hard into screening reports, a cursory search on reddit isn't throwing up anything like the correlation you suggest. Sure, I see some sort of "woke war" back and forth going on but nothing making the direct correlation you suggest. Even if you did throw up a link to something, TBH I'd take it all with a pinch of salt. Anyone can write up a fake review and post it online, for it to be swept up as truth.

The actors quotes don't do anything (for me anyway) to support an argument that the movie "being woke" (i.e. not making Johnny a womanizer and making Sue a powerful character) is causing the movie to be terrible.
