I'm looking for information about this address. My great uncle died here on 12th July 1931. His name was John Joseph Doherty, but he took the Gaelic Sean, and also the O' so was usually Sean O'Doherty.

Born in Ireland in 2989, his family moved to Dundee following the Jute industry when he was in his early teens. In his 20s he was a Sinn Fein supporter and organised funds and other things to support Irish independence.

His activity was reported in local papers, but reports stop around 1923.

The last information I have was a short notice of death in a Scottish newspaper saying that he died on 12th July 1931 at 32 Denmark St. The notice referred to his late residence in Dundee.

    Thank you for any help

There were two Denmark Streets — Great Denmark St and Little Denmark St.

Great Denmark St still exists — it links Gardiner Row and Gardiner Place. Belvedere College takes up most of one side of it.

Little Denmark St no longer exists — it was one of several streets that were obliterated when the ILAC Centre was constructed in the 1970s. It was a continuation northwards of Liffey St Upper, and ran between Henry St and Parnell St. What is now the River Island store stands more or less where the southern end of Little Denmark St used to be.

In your great uncle's time, Gt Denmark St would have been fairly commercial in character (as it is now) — shops and offices, with maybe some limited accommodation in upper floors. Gt Denmark St is quite short, and I don't know if even has a no. 32. Little Denmark St is the more likely option, since at the time it was more residential, and very densely populated — it had a lot of tenement housing, along with national school and a boys' orphanage. Also, of the two streets, it was the one more likely to be called just "Denmark St".

This early map of Dublin from the UCD collection which has door numbers places No. 32 Little Denmark Street two doors down from the church that once stood in the street.

At a guess I'd say 32 was close to where the entrance to Dunnes Stores supermarket is now.

As per this thread in Genealogy the UCD historic map collection won't be available for the foreseeable future.
