Toner after colour - do I need it ?

hi when getting my temporary colour in at the hairdresser to cover grey my hairdresser puts in a toner afterwards. It’s an extra €25 so I’m wondering if it’s worth it and what it’s for? My hair colour is a dark chestnut brown. He says it’s for helping to maintain the colour but do I really need it ?
