Still no power post storm - strange pattern however.....

I live in North Clare, in an L shaped development of 8 houses. 4 pairs of semi d's.

It's now almost a week after the storm and houses 1,3,5,and 7 still have no power. Houses 2,4,6, and 8 however do.

ESB haven't been able to offer any assistance or advice.

What might the issue be? I believe all the houses are on the same circuit.

Any advice or suggestions would be very welcome.

Probably houses are on different phases? I'd assume cable that links one phase to odd numbers is out of action or the xfmr winding is blown or a few other possiblities.

I can't think of any other reason it would be 50/50 split like that. I'm assuming odd numbered houses are on one side of the road and the even on the other?

I think as long as you all make sure the fault is logged all you can do is wait. Might be that they need to replace something they don't have in stock.

Houses are situated in an L shape. Starting with 1-4 and then turning 90 degrees for 5-8.

Outage is well logged.

Yep, phases are different in that case. The local transformer might de damaged.

Stupid as it might sound, don't be tempted to bring a cable over from a working house into a non-working house, there will be 400v AC in the difference between their live phase and yours.

Ok, I probably made it sound more dramatic than it is.

If house A was on phase 1 and house B was on phase 2 and A had a power cut B shared an extension cable to the other, if you then measured the voltage from neutral to live off the extension cable on house A you would read ~230v AC, as expected.

Let's say that the power was restored and the extension cable left in situ and the voltage was tested between the live in house A and the live from the extension from house B, then you would find that the voltage reads 416v AC between two live wires.

You then have the potential of some type of fault occurring with the attached appliances and the risk of 416v being present rather than the normal 230v. Rare case indeed, but it's possible.

Morning Folks

Going to jump on this, as my in-laws are experiencing something similar. Electricity supply returned to their area on tuesday evening, however they only have dimly lit bulbs, no appliances work. The light in the fridge is barely lit but the fridge doesnt cool anything. They only realised last night that the 7 or 8 houses around them all full functionality.

Does she need to get an electrician in to check if its something in the house or does she need to contact the ESB?

Sounds like a brownout, the incoming voltage is probably too low. I'd be contacting the ESB about that one.

In the meantime (and I know that this is going to be painful) but they should drop the breakers to everything other than the lights circuits to protect their appliances from undervoltage. There's a chance that it would be fine otherwise, but I'd prefer to have my stuff protected (and it's not likely to work in the meantime anyway).

Just to follow up on this, my in laws contacted the ESB and full power was restored the following evening so they enjoy some of the bank holiday at least. Thanks everyone for the input.

Power was returned on Saturday. Some roof tiles down but that's another issue.
