Is it that there is no rail services until after Red warnings have been lifted and rails have been deemed safe for operation? So there may be some services in the afternoon, subject to inspection.

Assume no buses at all tomorrow too.

As for rail , thats up to IE but the trains and drivers will all be in the wrong places so who knows.

Irish rail have already announced there will be no trains during the red warning periods. This applies to the whole network.

    They are all tilt tested

    Untitled Image

Can't remember the exact angle but they should be good for about a 35 degree tilt before they go over.

Wake me up when it's all over.

NTA Saying that all public transport will start to shut down two hours before the Red Warnings, so take that into account.

While that's sensible advice do all mobile masts have their own battery back up?

Wake me up when it's all over.

a lot just see it as overhype, the media coverage etc. especially compared to the past when storms weren't even named. don't think it's anything to do with culture wars or climate change denial

i think it's a combination of warnings being issued by county, where times only a tiny stretch of a massive country meets the criteria & at least the yellow warnings being nothing more than a bad day in peoples experience.

I'm sure what you've said is the case for a lot of those criticising weather warnings but it has certainly become a weird culture war issue for some, the poster I replied to included.

Aer Lingus have loaded in some cancellations Ryanair not yet by the looks of it, Dublin Airport = "check the carriers website" but dont provide detail about the early push, which isnt great as a lot of people will need to be moving during red times.,

Hurricane Charley was the last week of August 1986 and I think we can safely say that no-one was in school. It was also a surprise which is unsurprising given the technology then available.

Given the danger of fallen trees, you should appreciate how easily trains could get marooned, even if not hit by a falling tree. And given the long stopping distances for trains (about 2000m from 160 kph) even if trains were to operate they would have to reduce speed by at least 50%.

Having driven buses during orange warnings, there was pretty much no risk of toppling. Keeping the vehicle in a straight line above 20 or 30km/h is another matter altogether. Not to mention debris (including industrial bins, tree branches and street furniture) blowing everywhere. In a red warning, with Storm Force winds, it's not a risk I'd be happy to take.

Fair point the problem I more had was the fact they issued a red warning. For example they issued a red warning for Ophelia but yet I've seen storms that have caused more damage in Dublin than Ophelia did. I don't trust these warnings I think their just fear mongering.

Went down to Dunnes today and there were people stockpiling whereas if it had of been an orange warning you wouldn't get that.

This seems to be a very serious storm, might be one of the biggest in decades.

Faster than usual jet stream has supercharged Storm Éowyn

The jet stream is currently blowing across the Atlantic at speeds that are at least 100km/h faster than normal - and it has supercharged Storm Éowyn.

Forecasters are warning Storm Éowyn will hit harder than all 51 named storms that have gone before it.

    Stay home, stay safe.

Do people not realise that a weather forecast is a prediction and not a guarantee of what will happen?

Nearly all flights out of Dublin Airport now cancelled during the Red Warning period. There are a handful still listed to go, but I suspect they will be cancelled in time. After 11 it is more mixed with many scheduled, but also lots cancelled, likely knock on from aircraft being out of place.

Of course double check with your airline.

    Irish Rail are saying:

Early indications are that there will be significant disruption after Status Red, with multiple reports of fallen trees / power cables, level crossing faults etc.  Unless your route or service is confirmed as operational on this page, please do not undertake travel.

A good reminder that even as the Red Alert comes to an end, there will likely still be severe travel disruption for the next few hours, many trees down, power cables, etc.

Small numbers of flights taking off from Dublin Airport. The first one or two attempted landings have had to do go arounds and are still up.

Apparently conditions for the ground crews have been very rough, with some aircraft noses tilting up in the winds and they have had to retreat, but back out and working now.

First flight into Dublin has landed, from Copenhagen. The poor flight from Luton was doing loop de loops, looks like it tried again but has to go back into holding pattern, ouch to be on that flight!

Cork has had flights land in the last 30 minutes. Shannon looks like it might get it's first landing soon.

Eckk, it looks like that flight from Luton has given up and is diverting back to the UK!

However another flight from Boston just landed. First flight into Shannon landed too.

Dublin Bus Services are resuming, but they warn that there will continue to be lots of disruptions for the next few hours and the following diversions noted:

So far it looks like just 20 or so Dublin Buses (out of over a thousand) are currently out and running. No GAI buses and about 97 (out of 860) BE buses and coaches are running. No Luas yet and no trains yet.

    So still extremely limited service.
