Maybe this has been asked but how or why has Carlow Weather become a go to person / organisation for media outlets?

It's a bit like Donald Trump being president. It makes no real sense. But probably down to social media.

Because he's decent at forecasting the weather? Without being overly dramatic.

He knows what he's talking about and comes across well on the radio.

Also a gives a slightly different perspective to ME.

Ireland is a small country so what he offers is useful.

Thanks all. For the record, I’m not being critical of CW, I just find it unusual that he is now considered the first point of call for weather information with many media outlets.

Is he a weather enthusiast (if there is such a thing) or a proper professional?

He can say as he pleases without fear of being wrong. Met Eireann as a professional body don't have that luxury.

For that reason he sensationalise if he wishes which ME won't do.

To be fair to him, he doesn't sensationalise at all like some other social media weather accounts.

He is an excellent communicator and that's why he is the go to guy for the media.

Because of my lovely hair :D

He is accesible too and a fantastic speaker.

He's an excellent communicator, can put often complex explanations into the layman's language, tells it as it is without the need to sensationalise, and he is consistent in that he posts helpful content several times a day.

Seems like a really nice bloke too, to be fair.

He deserves the success he's having.

And he used to hang out here so don't you be knocking him (and his lovely hair).

He doesn’t work for the public sector so he can explain the situation far quicker and accurately and doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to the state

Alan seems like a nice guy and I always found his on air appearances decent. He knows what he’s talking about. I do find it a bit odd he’s a go-to now but I just guess he’s ready to get on air and direct abuse his position by exaggerating or being sensationalist.

He did an interview with Mick Clifford of the Irish Examiner. It may have the information you are looking for.

I have to hold my hand up here and admit I didn't read the thread title properly... I was talking about our other pal with his own colour coding and warning system. Apologies to Alan 🙋

Carlow weather will be on The Tonight Show probably 10:40 onwards as it’s all politics after the shenanigans of today.

I’m glad he’s the go to person for the media. Imagine if it was the other fella 🙈

a lecturer was talking to us about this years ago, that it can be a good side gig. you'll notice it's the same people popping up all the time, same talking heads in documentaries etc. you don't even need to be at the top of your field, just know what you're talking about, be able to communicate & don't be crazy/unpredictable 😂. you'll get a reputation & then when producers are looking for someone/see you on something they'll get in contact.

I'd think that's exactly what happen with CW, maybe had a few local radio gigs, someone heard that & got him on their show, then some nationals get in touch. now he's the default contact for anything weather related for every producer in the country

Good to see you here Alan! You do a great job of explaining the weather in a way people can understand. Best of luck to you!

Hes on TodayFM now and I also love his dashes of humour he includes even while factually reporting this event and not over or underestimating it at all.

Find him a much easier listen than MetEireann and far easier to follow.

    Invisible hair.

Best of luck to him. No problems or issue with him. Just s curiosity of how he (you) rose to prominence.

IIRC, all started with a text and call to Joe Duffy?

John Gibbons is a perfect example of your hypothesis

Ming thinks Villain/Alan forecasts the weather by looking at a weather app on his phone.

It's cos he supports Aston Villa, obviously 🤣
