Working in Customs Ireland

Id advise anyone who is looking to apply for a job in customs in Ireland not to bother. The salary is disgraceful and your expected to stay behind your time, for example start at 5am meant to leave at 1pm, but you have to stay until 5.30pm. You cant claim overtime unless your a HEO but you can get the time back in lieu, but when this happens theres no staff to cover the jobs. Your paid at a clerical officer grade, work on a 24 hour roster, you receive 25% shift allowance on top of salary but your expected to seize drugs, cigarettes, tobacco, alcohol, money etc. Your dealing with the public who if caught smuggling is very aggressive towards you. You have to arrest them and bring them to court, all whilst being paid as a clerical officer. There is no staff because everyone leaves as soon as they get a chance. They provide no tea, coffee or milk but expect you to stay out in minus degree weather. You get no bonuses or commission. No other country in the EU treats their custom officers this way. The only good thing id say is, is that we dont look after immigration thats a specific unit in the gards.

We should be paid a different grade, and be paid overtime, or be able to choose not to do overtime and go home. Each station is treated differently, wether they work in a mail centre, an airport or the ports.

Revenue Commissioners need to look after their staff.

If you work in customs please give your input here, id have liked to know what is going on before I take the job. As for the union helping us, theyre useless, will take your money but you get no help,

Do you mean before you took the job rather then take the job?

In a time of almost fully employment why are you still there? Sounds like a lot of whining from just one individual with a large slice of entitlement.

Your paid at a clerical officer grade

    Standard civil service entry grade.

25% shift allowance on top of salary

Again I suspect it standard civil service shift rate, but check with your union.

but your expected to seize drugs, cigarettes, tobacco, alcohol, money etc. Your dealing with the public who if caught smuggling is very aggressive towards you

Part of the job description for a customs office I would have thought.

If you are really that upset about it request a transfer to a similar grade post?

In my dealings with Customs in Dublin Port, they have nice offices (warm/bright etc) and are on a shift system.

Yes they are busy, but as someone working in the private sector, dealing with them, their version of "busy" is not the same as ours.

As mentioned by another poster, there is nothing stopping the OP from requesting a transfer.
