Insurance & Provisional Driver Question

    1. I got my licence less than a year ago and have my own car
    2. My partner is looking to get his licence (he already knows how to drive and has a licence in a different country so hoping he can expedite.)
    3. We were thinking he could use my car to do his lessons and the test.

Question: My insurance broker is trying to quote me for a full year's insurance but we don't live together so if he passes first go - it's unlikely he will need the insurance for the rest of the year. The broker said we can add his name for a day or two at a time but the lessons will be spread out so it will get a bit messy. The broker isn't being very helpful or forthcoming.

From an insurance standpoint - how would this work in general? Do I just add him for the days he is doing the lessons and the test? Do I just add him for the year?

    Any help greatly appreciated.

Add him for the year. There's no guarantee he'll pass and there is a waiting time for tests.

honestly OP my advice is add them for the year and whenever possible (once he’s comfortable enough of course), allow them to drive with you.

If you’re both heading off for the day; meet them wherever and then let your partner drive away it’s the best practice he can get honestly. I passed my test first attempt and I’m convinced it’s due to constantly driving since I got the permit not just doing the lessons.

His confidence and ability will be much higher the more hours of driving under his belt before the test- 12 lessons & a few hours here and there driving around is going to make it much more difficult imo

Just so you realise that you cannot legally be his accompanying driver as you don't have a full licence for 2 years.

For cheapest insurance you need an Irish licence.

I assume their foreign licence cannot be swapped for an Irish licence?

I assume you know the rules, theory test, provisional licence, I think minimum 10 lessons with an instructor before you can apply for test, driving on provisional needs a fully qualified driver with you with minimum 2 years full licence ?

I would get theory test, get 10 lessons with instructor using instructor car and then apply for test.

Then and only then would I consider insuring on shared car, to practice a lot before the test. If you want to get test as soon as possible I would only do lessons with driving instructor, Minimum one lesson a week as you forget. Maybe 10 lessons quickly and then a good few lessons before the test date, all using the driving instructors car. That may work out cheaper than the insurance, and it would reduce need to get a 2 year qualified driver to accompany them.

If he has a foreign licence, he can apply for the reduced EDT, which means he’ll only need to do a minimum of 6 lessons. The 6 month wait before sitting a test is also negated. The waiting list is an average of 6-7 months now anyway I believe, so he would be as well doing the rEDT as soon as possible and then driving as much as he can until the test.
