Driven from Galway to Dublin. Light snow and snowmen in East Galway, sleet from Galway to Athlone, bad sleet and snow Athlone to Enfield but not sticking and lashing rain the rest.

light flakes only in Rochestown right now but already 1cm to 2cm or so on all surfaces so not complaining. Imagine plenty to come but that bloody Shannon radar….

Heavy snow here now in Roundwood. +250M ASL. Was snowing all last night, then a few hours of rain earlier and now back to snow. Looks like this will be hanging around for a few days given the low temps forecast...

Deep cold hasn't even arrived yet! Tuesday to Thursday will be below freezing most of the time except in the NW where itl be much like today.

In a way I am glad I cancelled my plans to travel to Limerick this weekend, even though I missed the snow. I would have been travelling this road around now, that is if I had gotten out of west Limerick.

The wife text me from Whitewater Shopping Center (Newbridge) at 14:25 and I could see the flakes outside the window from the photo she took. Shortly afterwards schleet and a mix of snow picked up in Naas. Coming down heavy now but it would take sometime to get properly stuck on the ground. Here is hoping🤞

I can confirm as I am now sitting on the runway in Dublin. They are going to try sweep the runway in Cork before it freezes and hopefully fly back down later.

Is there any official weather stations near Limerick /North kerry where the worst of the conditions are? Just wondering could there be any snow depth records threatened or are those areas above official altitude parameters?

Lightly Snowing in Kinnegad last few hours but not sticking at all sadly.

No it's definitely more elevated than that. I thought it was 170m but just checked the topographic map and Rathdrum is around 150-160m at the middle of the main street. There's a steep hill down out of it though so really depends where you define the point I suppose. Makes a huge difference in these marginal setups for snow.

Everywhere around Tinahely Co wicklow has heavy snow and we've more rain than sleet!!

Kinsale coast we saw about 5 snowflakes. Wasnt expecting much was hoping for a little more. Cant complain, Nov was miraculous enough. We generally dont get snow here unless its an easterly. Loving the pics and analysis. Thank you all.

Wet snow now falling in Celbridge. Wet-bulb has fallen to 1.0 °C, from 2.3 °C 45 minutes ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,570 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

Not necessarily. Thick wet snow will establish a base for itself quite quickly, irrespective of the ground being wet ahead of time. There is no heat in the road surfaces, so the lying water will be part frozen into slush relatively fast.

This is the problem with this event. Irrespective of it being rain or slush or wet snow, when it freezes hard tonight, which it will almost everywhere, its gonna be friggin lethal.

In some ways a few inches of snow is a better bet for traction underfoot and underwheel.

Still snowing heavily here, went for a walk around town; lovely but lethal, it's gonna be a disaster when it freezes over later!! Idiots speeding and people driving without lights on! 🙄🙄

    Approaching 4 inches now 👌

Unreal snowfall here since around 11am. There's a good foot of snow built up on the tall evergreen hedge and it keeps falling off with the weight! Cars are buried and it's still bucketing down. Hope the power stays on.

Here's the hedge to give you an idea of accumulations in south kilkenny, with the potential for more of the same up to around 8pm.
