I was wondering if this is allowed in the Defence Forces? I thought I saw guys clay pigeon shooting at one time in the Glen of Imaal.

maybe the clay pigeons were actually enemy drones that were legitimately being shot down due to national security concerns?

Do you mean in the Defence Forces, or on Defence Forces lands?

There is no blanket answer to either question.

Are there organised leisure and competition shoots (targets, clays, marksmanship) in the Defence Forces? Yes, but under tight control.

Can civilians shoot on DF lands? Yes, but only hunting, only in season, only when the ranges are out of use and only with permits.

If you saw a Clay shoot at a non-permanent position, it will have been DF members. Certain units train on the Benelli M4 semi-auto 12 gauge for close combat and special operations tasks.

The guys I saw were in uniform but it was evening time.

    Sounds self-explanatory to me.

Its allowed WITH PERMISSION which not going to sugar coat this , if you're asking if it's possible you're not getting permission.

There's actually a clay pigeon shooting club within the DF along with many other sports id assume you saw the DF clay pigeon club they would have express permission to use certain grounds after I'm sure alot of paperwork

Just remember if you don't have permission it's armed trespassing on a DF training ground

Even if some of that ground is open to the public it's not open to be shot on and you will pick up an armed trespassing charge and you won't ever hold a firearms certificate again

So don't go off thinking just because it's possible you can do it.
