A neighbour asked me to see if I could sort his signal issue out. He has a sky dish with quad LNB . I checked Dish aligment and its fine. I put the meter on an unused dish output , signal reading good. cable seems good yet no signal at tv. I made up another cable with the intention of replacing existing one yet when I put meter on it no signal. All 4 dish outputs are reading fine on meter . So to sum up 1 meter cable connected to meter all reading good. 10 m cable to tv ,no signal. I tried a second roll of cable , no different. Any idea what could be happening? Thanks.

I'd check the F connector at the end of the cable going in to the TV to see if it has come loose or maybe make a new connection on the end.

Have you got your own receiver you could connect up to his cable and then on to TV via hdmi to rule out an issue with the tuner on the TV itself?

I'm not sure over a 10m run would the signal meter give a correct reading.

I have a proper satellite meter with a built in tft display . The f connectors are fine. I've installed loads of dishes over the years , never seen this before.

Is it black on Fconnector at tv due to water ingress.

Is sat tuned correctly on tv and / or not on an encrypted channel.

Its not a Sky Q service your using by any chance and a hybrid lnb fitted?

No water Ingress. It's not a sky Q either. If I connect a new length of cable to the LNB the signal doesn't carry yet the 1m cable I use to connect from the LNB To my meter is reading a strong signal. The meter had a built in TV screen So I can also watch the channel . Its perfect.

I would swop the lnb and see what happens. Then try another sat receiver.

My guess the low-noise amplifier in the LNB has failed.

After the weak signal arrives at the LNB it must be amplified before downconversion and carriage down the cable.

I had and old LNB which I tried and it had the same issue. Be a bit unlucky for both to be faulty. I'll get a new one when I get a chance and see if that sorts it.

Yes that would be unlikely but possible.

When testing the second LNB did you connect it to the receiver for testing or the meter?

Could a faulty satellite receiver/cable (short) be damaging the LNB?

    Tm

Connected it to meter. This is the meter I use.

Another thought, is the satellite receiver supplying sufficient power to LNB?

Can another box be connected to test?

    The fun of troubleshooting.

I could connect another but I'm certain this meter is good..I have a second meter without the tft screen and its the.same. Ill get a new lnb Saturday and go again.

As I read it, the dish is connected directly to the TV tuner, not a satellite box?. There could be something wrong with the screen. Unless he also has an aerial and it is displaying terrestrial channels OK? When did the satellite channels disappear?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,046 ✭✭✭UrbanFret

Yes to a TV with a built in sat tuner. Theres no signal getting to it though. The Irish channels through the aerial working fine. The sat channels went after the recent storm..the dish hasnt moved though. A new LNB is the next step before anything else.

Just came across this thread now, as the in-laws satellite channels have disappeared since Christmas Eve, and re-tuning them is having no effect.
I’ll try some of the steps on here over the next couple of days, hopefully can get them sorted. Aerial channels still fine.

If you've got easy access to LNB on the dish have a look at the plastic feedhorn cap for cracking or other damage which will allow moisture ingress and damage to internals.

Also check cable security to the LNB

Is it a tv or sat box that has lost channels as different ways of doing things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,440 ✭✭✭ratracer

I noticed on the dish that the cover for the cables at the LNB is gone, and cable connector is exposed.
Would that mean the cable might need to be replaced if it’s damp?

Is a Combi box. I’ve tried rescanning but got nothing at all from that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,740 ✭✭✭swoofer

its more than likely the dish has moved, can you access it easily? and have you checked the connections on the box? Is it the box with a single sat uner or dual? say make and model of combi box.

Thanks, I’ll have a look at it tomorrow when I’m over there.

Think the skirt might be up and not shielding the F connectors and one reason why technicians cut the cables and fit new F connectors and lnb as seized / corroded when about 10 years of age.

So finally got to look at this today. Sat dish had moved slightly to 131 degrees. Adjusted it back to 142, (using my phone)

LNB is level and zero offset, but still receiving no signal on box or sat finder. Connections were tight, but shield wasn’t in place.
Box is an Edison Piccollo S2 T2C. Aerial signal on it is fine.
Should my next step be trying to replace the LNB? Or would all the cable need to be replaced if it’s had water ingress at the LNB?
Thw box went from fully working to no satellite signal overnight.

Can you check box works at another location.

Water ingress runs through the cable and have a burnt mark on box at F connector.

Lnb offset is zero (skew) ?

Shouldn't the skew be about -16 degrees for Galway

If the skew is off will you still get a signal but with picture breakup ?

    free to air

While using the Lidl Satellite Beeper to check if dish was pointing in the right direction , I am no longer getting a ‘beep’ . I was getting it before the snow fall .

QUESTION could the snowfall make the signal not being received . Would appreciate any info on the matter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,913 ✭✭✭✭The Cush

Could be dish out of alignment, faulty LNB or cable/ connection issue.

Quickest is to check cable connections to the LNB for security.

While up there check the LNB for any signs of damage especially the feedhorn plastic cover.

I think I lost signal once due to an ice build up on LNB

    🧐IMHO, God wants us all to ENJOY many,many ice-creams , 🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦

I have now got a loud piercing beep. The cable and the LNB unit seems to be intact and very much looks like that there is no water ingress. I am getting loads of stations now , German, Dutch , etc, I have gone up to 1000 and there is about circa 400 channels recorded BUT, BUT, BUT, BUT no sign of the channels I want eg ITV, Channel 4, BBC 1 , BBC 2, and NHK, etc, etc. Anyone know why is this?

I cut down some tree branches which might have been interfering with the signal

Your dish is not aligned to 28 East Astra 2. It might be on 19 East Astra 1. You can look at the channels there to see if you are getting some of those.

Agreed sounds like dish is on 19.2 which has German channels.
