Which axe to get

Planning on upgrading my cheapo splitting axe, what would be a decent make to look at and which suppliers would stock it.

Hi rje likely a similar age to me,

I am 1966 vintage and getting creaky.

I like to use an antique Elwell for splitting, It has lovely rounded cheeks and splits beautifully whilst seldom sticking.

I'd say you'd get one of these (they were popular and highly regarded) from a secondhand tool dealer. There's a couple on adverts and done deal and instagram too I believe.

For splitting you want a maul, not an axe.

I've been using a Fiskars x39 for the last 5 years. The fiberglass handle takes some of the sting out of it, compared to the wood handles I've used before. I may just be going soft 🙂 .

I have a Hultafors splitting axe and find it very good, it will either split the wood or bounce off it, never gets stuck

Cheers. See lots of online suppliers, but would like to 'feel' it beforehand, is there any walk in places to get one, Dublin or westmeath ideally?.

Also what's the general conclusion on fiberglass v wood handle??

For my sledges and pickaxes I don't like anything else but wood....

Amazon.de €66 approx at the moment for a Fiskars X25. Bought one a few years ago. Made short work of leylandiis that I had taken down. Shipping is about €12

I just ordered an x7 and an x27 on Amazon.de.

Tractor is out of order for the next 3-4 weeks so not having the block splitter available means lot of manual chopping of very dry knotty ash/spruce.

Lovely axes, look very smart on instagram. Fiskars are cheaper and not instagramable, but absolute workhorses.

I've a Hultafors splitting axe, and I'd recommend it, whatever way there designed it never gets stuck in the wood, it either splits the log or hops off it and will split it with another strike or two

Have an Fiskars X27 which has been excellent, get a wedge and sledge for the knotty timber and save yourself a lot of time and effort.
