I was merely suggesting that people like you from both side of the coin can have their own safe spaces where they can indulge each other and the rest of us can enjoy boards without being bombarded with russo-ukrainian issue in every second thread.

If statements of facts, specific claims dont have to be supported then sure the CA forum is the conspiracy theories forum. You can post any old rubbish you like under the guise of a current conspiracy theory, no evidence needed, there are no standards of evidence in CA. Mods have declared they arent fact checkers.

You can dump any amount of Russian lies without foundation...

So there's seemingly no grounds anymore on CA to close a conspiracy theory thread or delete a post with as long as it relates to current events.

Don't open that can of worms! Whilst I agree with you that it's where outlandish, unevidenced claims belong. There are issues enough with that forum, that are in fairness to the admin being reviewed and acted upon. That would only mean shifting the problem rather than addressing it.

The few posters who do the drive by propaganda posting and disappear when questioned? It may seem a good idea to silo them but, what happens when a Google search brings someone curious to that silo? They find a pile of posts reinforcing Russian talking points with no refutation on the thread. It makes that thread appear valid as noone is disputing their "facts".

To my mind, addressing the claims directly on thread is the best way to deal with propaganda, of all sides! In CA in particular, while opinions matter and don't require evidence or supporting info, claims regarding Russia, it's war aims, its methods and it's successes are regularly dropped in the tread and when queried, refuted or labelled as BS? The poster in question disappears for a while and only resurfaces when the thread moves to a new topic.

Now imagine being brought to that thread, rather than their siloed one by Google? The same claims posted, 1 with 2 or 3 other other backslapping boyars reinforcing spurious claims?

    Or

1 with the same claims directly addressed on thread? With those claims refuted or the basis of them teased out and tested?

I know which one I'd prefer to see and which is less likely to allow unimpeded spread of propaganda.

Now the antagonist in my example above is Russian but, it may just as well be Ukrainian, or Chinese or Martian!

In any partisan thread, whomever the parties are, it is IMHO more important to address the claims on thread, than it is to silo any party.

Force posters to own their claims and in the long tradition of good discussion forums, defend their claims. Treat drive by posting and refusal to engage as bad faith posting and/or acting the dick.

If it's relevant to the thread, it might get a mention but the vast majority of the discussion is kept to the mega thread. The reality is that it's a war in Europe so is gonna be discussed pretty heavily on an Irish site.

Ya, you're right. Throwing them into an echo chamber would be worse.

That’s why the Rant folium is best. The very section they post in is all the refutation that is required. I’d be fairly sure the posts would dry up very quickly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,423 ✭✭✭CalamariFritti

But @banie01 nobody is actual addressing any facts (or not) on that thread. All you have there is a bunch of thread pitbulls who come on storming onto every single post they dont like screaming their heads off, calling names, making accusations of being a 'paid v****' and throwing whatabouts. The best you will ever get as an actual reply to the point is 'thats a Kremlin lie'.

That thread is not capable nor is it willing of discussion. That thread IS the rant forum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,025 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

Multiple posters put together detailed posts, rebutting the Russian propaganda points posted. Totally civil.

The propagandists have no response. Weasel words or whataboutery or disappear for few days, ignore the rebuttals and rehash the lies. Rinse and repeat.

So totally understandable when eventually they stop getting such replies, and instead their conduct called out for what it is - vatnik propaganda dumps.

Well I suppose there are two sides to this. I experienced that thread entirely the way I described it.

And even if there actually were maybe multiple posters properly engaging they would get drowned out by the overwhelming pitbull noise. Which is not helped by the fact those pitbulls are getting away with murder with regards to trolling, insults and a multitude of other infractionable behaviours like incitement to hatred, racism, hate speech etcpp.

If proper standards of moderation were ever applied to that thread it would have had to be closed for good after a month or so with half the posters sitebanned.

Is the Feedback forum itself actually moderated?

Because this rule doesn't seem to be enforced… perhaps consideration could be given to applying the rules at a technical level as per CA.

The CA restriction seem to have been added in response to persistent re-reg trolls primarily on the Russia and Trump thread.

You need to have a minimum postcount of 100 and your account must be at least 3 months old before you can post in this forum

Prime example of what that thread is about.

Post literally anything and if you do not include full pro ukrainian loyalty pledge along with some russophobic insults you will immediately get labelled.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,025 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

Post anything as a poster who isnt even supposed to post in this forum, and has a lot of knowledge of the site despite just joining.

About a thread that was flooded with rereg trolls and seemingly a main driver in the change to CA access rules.

    Yep. Prime example.

You do realise IT IS the modus operandi of Russia to target social media with misinformation.

One side is committing war crimes, kidnapping children. It’s easy to defend Ukraine. It’s actually natural. To give any support or understanding to the Nazi like Russian regime is a lot less easy to support naturally. Therefore any support for Russia is suspect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,171 ✭✭✭TheRepentent

The "orcs" naming convention originally came from radio coms of the ukrainian armed forces…I guess in a NSFW version of Lord of the Rings , Orcs would be raping and commiting war crimes. Personally I think it's an apt description of russians

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,171 ✭✭✭TheRepentent

I think it was a valid point. boards.ie mods are happy to allow the support of rape ,war crimes and genocide once said comments are "polite".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,313 ✭✭✭patnor1011

Any Russian operative worth his salt would not bother after reading first few pages of that thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,951 ✭✭✭✭EmmetSpiceland

Wasn’t too long ago that the Russian apologists were trying to claim that orc was a reference to ordinary Russian citizens.

Nonsense, of course, but wouldn’t be surprised if that descriptor was verboten before long too.

tbh it's just short hand for "rapists ,mass murders and war criminals" ….israeli's are desert orcs etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,025 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

Yes god forbid the raping Russian scum soldiers committing war crimes on a daily basis are called orcs lest their propagandists take offence

They never take offence on behalf of their victims though except to concern troll and cry crocodile tears.

Sad state of affairs with the site if it gets more concerned about terms like orcs than apologists for atrocities trotting out lies and weasel words.

You can be sure they at laughing at such moderation that "babysits" them to ensure they can peddle their propaganda unhindered without any expectation of facts, evidence or actual discussion or robust criticism for their apologia.

Is Vatnick something to do with Mick Wallace?

    Or would that be VAT-nick?

    Or both????

Jesus lads you just cant help yourselves can you? Ye are a complete embarrassment.

Smelling propaganda everywhere while at the same being the single most obvious propaganda believers I've ever come across. You're like the fkn Spanish Inquisition so far up your own holes you dont even realise what the real world looks like anymore.

And of course the rest of us are all Russians or paid trolls or whatever.

You couldnt make this sh1t up. I really fear for all of us when grown ups can seemingly be turned into crazies just like that.

Stay out of the Ukrainian war thread then you won't be missed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,025 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

And once again, as seen on multiple previous threads - impossible to have a constructive discussion in Feedback when it is not actively moderated.

Russian apologists were trying to claim that orc was a reference to ordinary Russian citizens.

I thought it was the other side doing that, either implying there's no innocent Russian, or trying to claim it wasn't a slur… (if search worked on this site I'd be able to find examples of that happening anyway)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,593 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

No the rape in LOTR is just your own weird fetish fantasy and chance to get a dig at Israel. Tolkien never had fùckin rape in any of his books. Theres no bloody NSFW version.

Orcs were creatures of mindless destruction who would destroy and kill just for fun without considering any consequences. Thats how the Russian soldiers got the title orc their love of mindless destruction.

Are idiots actually spreading that Tolkien wrote about rape FFS? God the illiteracy levels of some is bloody criminal and their guff is believed and spread

Real reason why certain posters don’t like the name Vatnik in particular…

It’s beyond doubt the Kremlin engages on social media re misinformation. In particular ‘locals’ saying things like, ‘Russia was only responding to NATO threats’ or Ukraine is losing the war, ‘best they give up now’ is the modus operandi. But, that narrative is degraded when the posters are called out for being compromised/shills. The term Vatnik is succinct.

Can anyone come up with a plausible explanation as to why else someone would be pro Russia?
