WhatsApp - is there a way of retrieving deleted items from the cache?

    Hi folks, a search on the web proved fruitless so I'm trying here.

    Is there a way of accessing WhatApp's cache/retrieving deleted threads/finding a WA recycling bin (last backup to GoogleDrive was in October, no notification history)?

    I'll start by saying that I hate WA (Meta, etc) but that I had to download it to keep messages to someone as a log. I used it only for that reason.

    Last night I shared a contact, but accidentally added the wrong name. I went to delete the message but instead I stupidly deleted the whole chat thread and two years' worth of log with it. Somewhere on the web I saw a mention of a recycling bin but I can't find it anywhere on my phone (Android, Xiaomi MiA3). The WA cache is still there. Any ideas on how I can undo the deletion and recover the messages?

    The last back-up to Google Drive (something else I'm not a fan of) was in October; I also checked the notification history but it's just tumbleweeds.
