Was going to go for an obvious choice Bubble Bobble but decided on it's sequel Rainbow Islands as I've not really played it .

Same rules apply . 1cc , normal arcade version /mame.

Highest score end of Sunday takes it .

Used to be quite good at this on the C64 but the arcade game is a different beast entirely.

    Ohhh balls is it?

I remember having the c64 version as a nipper so I thought it was the same gig😬

Is it totally different game ?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,788 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Well I mean in terms of brutality. The C64 version is a fine conversion, one of the best on the system, but it was never going to accurately reproduce the arcade.

It's a good choice and another game I want to get better at.

Ahhh grand ,thought it was completely different version all together when said t#5 so was gonna change it.

I'll fire it up for a few credits later so and reach for the rainbow

Will see this evening if it's on MiSTer, I think there's a Saturn port of it too if not.

Don't even know what MISTer is .thats how out of touch I am . :)

Sounds like a crock of Shyt3 if you can't add games to the platform /application yourself .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,160 ✭✭✭Inviere

Well in this case adding means reverse engineering the pcb and converting it into Verilog/VHDL..…

Mister is an fpga hardware emulation platform, and a damn fine way of accurately recreating hardware/enjoying the games available on it.

Quick first bash, have never played it before, the controls are absolutely lovely.

First boss put an end to my deathless run haha

Didn't get too much time on this one as I updated mame in retroarch and it is now creating an other mame instance when I press the credit button on the keyboard and then destroys that instance when I press a joypad button. I haven't a clue what is going on but I should have left it.

Thankfully this game works in finalburn.

This was a decent run I got. There's a secret to this game to get high points and I'm so lovely I'll tell you.

Before you hit the boss you want to have collected all 7 gems representing the colours of the rainbow. This gives you big bonuses and an extra life. You get gems by either using the star items or killing an enemy by having you rainbow fall on them, hitting them with the rainbow won't generate a gem.

There's also some nonsense about collecting all gems on all stages (might even be in order of the colours of the rainbow) that unlocks secret levels at the end of the game. This never made it into most home conversions. Alas I doubt we will get that far!

Forgot about this ...gave it a credit there before bed...got some abysmal score.

Seems like the c64 version to me .

There's loads of secret bonuses in this game if I remember , like bubble bobble has.

I forgot how much I hate the music ...it makes me nervous, on edge , sad and happy all at the same time

If you can manage this then fair play to you:

    Unlock The Secret Rooms

During any stage, collect 7 small Diamonds in order from left to right. If done right, when you beat the boss of the level, a secret door will appear and inside you'll find a permanent ability and the Big Diamond of the Island.

Do this on all seven islands you unlock 7 more levels and need to get their diamonds and mirrors or some **** and youll get a true ending.

    Gave this another go ,

Didnt get all the 7 diamonds on Stage one or two so could have done a lot better

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,883 ✭✭✭unky chop chop

All in All,I dont think Rainbow islands can hold a candle to bobble bobble. I had fond memories of it on the c64 and thought it might be better . Maybe I need to settle into it, but Its just not gelling with me .

Yeah I loved it on C64 as well but even then I preferred Bubble Bobble on C64.

I was playing this on the Nintendo Switch. There's a version of it you can download for cheap.

I found it difficult to get the hang of the controls. Not sure if it's a Switch specific thing or just the game in general. Either way, i wasn't getting near the scoreboard!

You can't jump on a rainbow otherwise it will collapse but I think you can bounce off them like the bubbles in bubble Bobble if you hold the jump button.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,883 ✭✭✭unky chop chop

Yeah I copped that earlier , my jump button got stuck and I bounced of them instead of collapsing them

For such a simple looking game, there really are quite a few different game mechanics. It's really interesting. I was just getting used to jumping on rainbows to crush my enemies into diamonds and now you tell me this.

Next you'll be telling me you're able to do dragon punches. 😂

Still have yet to get passed stage 7 but the diamond collecting is resulting in far better scores.

This is exactly what my issue was. I'd jump and collapse the rainbow. So it seems you don't jump and just walk on up the subsequent rainbows, which I couldn't get the hang of. Also, I think its the shoulder button you press which has a combined action of shooting a rainbow and jumping on it.

The missus had this game on the Atari or Amstrad back in the day and she was able to play it no bother, so i think it's a learned skill that you never lose, like riding a bike!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,883 ✭✭✭unky chop chop

Sorry , just have to laugh ...I mean it's like walking a stairs . Fire a rainbow walk up it , fire, another ,walk up it , repeat .

You can do this ,come on bman . I believe in you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,883 ✭✭✭unky chop chop

Jesus , can't get near my last score.

I remember what must have done it now.

At one stage giant money bags starting raining down on Me on world 2. Must have collected something !!!!

I just got thunderbolts raining down there. Where are me bleeding money bags 😂

I had stars falling from the sky yesterday and I had absolutely no idea what I did or even the benefit of it 😂

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,788 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I was wondering how you got so much more than me.

Anyway I think my first run was beginners luck because it's all going wrong for me. Can't get the last gem before any boss. Dying an awful lot more and didn't even see the second stage boss. Maybe I'm tired but I didn't even crack 400,000

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,883 ✭✭✭unky chop chop

Haaa , so was I after I gave it another few credits and even getting the gems I didnt come near that score , usually around the 500 grand mark, then I remembered being flooded with raining money bags ,😂

    Absolute fluke

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,788 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I'm done. I got to this round without losing a life and then proceeded to absolutely balls the whole thing up. I still don't think I'd have gotten close to unky chop chops score unless I got to world 4.

Yeah kinda messed this whole round up with a complete freak fluke score, sorry :(

I found out if you get 10 red stars you get the raining money bags!!

Anyway it's unfair I pick next game as I've picked 2 already .

@o1s1n do you want the honours for this round ?
