Replace Eir Router with TPlink AX5400 or add Asus RX8 for better Wifi - FTTH in place

    Hi

Trying to get anyones experiences of moving from Eir router completely or just for WiFi.

Am trying to determine what might be best for my home setup as I dont like the Sagecomm F3000 that Eir have provided and the amount of reboots it requires to keep running WiFi along with its poor range of coverage.

I have been thinking of changing it out with TPLink Ax5400 device, wondering has anyone done this with that or other manufacturers models as I think the Power of the TPLink will handle device requests better.

    1. I Read that you only connect ONT to new router and configure VLAN10 Tagging. no username/password needed?
    2. Is there any issues with EirTV if you do, I cant imagine there is but worth asking.
    3. I know I will lose the VOIP thats not an issue.

The other option I was thinking was moving the WiFi management only to an ASUS zenwifi RT8 device as the reviews on it are really good for coverage and performance but my worry is if the F3000 will still negate moving the WiFi if its still servicing my ethernet connected devices.

    Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

if you’re going to make a change to your hardware, remove the F3000 from the equation altogether. There’s no benefit or need to keep it involved. Pick a well-reviewed router that supports VLAN tagging, run a cable from the ONT to the WAN port on the new router and away you go.

You can pull the config settings from the F3000 before you remove it but with Eir, leaving the ‘internet connection type’ setting on ‘DHCP’ or ‘Dynamic IP’ (whatever it might be called in your new router of choice) will usually work fine. If not, select PPPoE and the eir@eir.ie/broadband1 user/pw combo. If it’s the Asus you go for, you’ll find the VLAN settings under LAN→IPTV and set VID to 10. In the TP-Link, it’ll be under IPTV/VLAN.

If WiFi coverage is a particular issue in your home due to layout or size then perhaps consider a mesh system. An Asus ‘RT8’ isn’t a model I’ve heard of (did you mean XT8?) but maybe it’s an older one no longer in production.

Getting rid of your ISP-provided equipment is nearly always a good idea and in your case, with Eir, it’s trivial to do. Go for it.

Thanks for the details, yeah got the model wrong its the XT8 I was looking at which is pure WiFi only. Going to Try the TP Link 5400 the latest Archer 75 version is suppose to have decent Wifi, i get reasonable signal around the house presently but the F3000 just has so many wifi issues that I have to restart regularly anything else has to be better.

Did you swap out the Eir Router for the TX5400 - was it easy and did it make much of a difference? Thanks
