    Afternoon,

I have decided on the car i am looking for , the 50th year shows all over the country and seeing alot of them has sealed the deal.

mk2 golf gti 16v, so i have found one but it has a mk3 2.0 16v engine would be a nice improvement, i dont mind its not 100% oem.

issue i see is how i vrt it as modified and then insure it as a classic.

I am sure all not all classics in ireland have never had engine swops/ upgrades etc.

    Thank you in advance

For VRT, it entirely depends on whats written on the V5. Easiest path will be if the V5 hasn't got the engine swap declared - because then the car will easy to get details for - the VRT centre will want to find the exact model before clearing it, even if its still only €200 for the VRT.

Anytime I have VRT'd a car, the engine number and chassis numbers have been checked against the V5 / German documents. No issues if all the docs match. As regards a classic policy, if they ask if the vehicle has been modified and you choose not to declare this then you know the story.

thank you for that, so might be better to have a change with updated engine and no V5 change.

Yeah it would imo - details need to match to a car on file generally, or you end up jumping through a few hoops. I imported a 00 GTi 18 months ago - but it was the first one with the K03S turbo that had gone through the system for that year. So had to wait a fortnight or so for Rosslare to get details and put it up on the system. If details on the V5 don't match what revenue hold on file for that model car, they'll do likewise I'd imagine

Anytime I VRT a car they don’t actually care about the engine number. If its on the V5 they won’t cross reference it. The VIN on the other hand is important and that will be cross referenced. The only time they check the engine number is if its not present on the V5 etc
