North Connemara is the place to watch. Huge amount of SNOW on the mountains and an additional problem is that alot of Connemara is Out of Electricity now for the last two days so hopefully people are aware.

Lakes of rain fell in town overnight. Remnants of snow still on ground, even though it is now 13c! Buses etc running, very little traffic on road, supermarkets still closed

Worth a red warning? Hmm no.

YES it was - in fairness to MET.IE they said WEST Galway.

For simplicity sake they do not show Country's by townlands and regions.

If they had such a system - I am sure it would have just been Connemara area that would have been RED

I think county is about as small as it can get really in a metrological sense. However I believe the city and county councils have much better local information than we are able to see. The road flood map I linked above for instance should be much more readily available to deal with things on the ground..

You can sign up to a text alert system with the council, which would have sent out those images and any updates/ road closures etc.

Now that is terrible, people in many places west of city seem to only have SOS capability on phones, that seems extremely poor for some ice and rain

They can easily draw a line on the map and publish it. Or say everything west of rossaveel mamm cross and westport is red as an simplified example.

How do councils close roads for events? They list every road, Appy the same but this is cumbersome.

Businesses lose money for nothing in the current scenario when it was unwarranted and not for the first time.

It was more dangerous Friday morning than Saturday morning but no red.

Are you proposing latitude and longitude to weather patterns?. Also using similar houses right beside each other will have differing advice using a straight line for demarcation but it's possible just more difficult to work on

nothing complex as that, society in general would think you are talking a foreign language. For simplified approach, draw area on a map that will be in the projected impact and publish it. list each area if people want to be pedantic or cannot read/access a map. Was asked for an idea so gave one, not saying its perfect but anything is better than a county approach where some counties are extremely big.

just stating the entire county where only a certain section would be actually affected makes a mockery of the system and run the risk of people ignore red warning due to a history of getting it wrong. From reading the esb outages, the vast majority were in the days previous and not Saturday morning.

Why wasn't a red issued for thursday/friday giving those issues along with all the crashes with schools opting to close or open much later in the day. A lot of injuries/accidents Friday morning with the ice around, if red was issue there it would have saved a lot considering it would have fell into the categories of "take action" "Difficult travelling conditions" "possibly widespread damage to property and infrastructure" . Saturday morning was brilliant, all snow/ice was gone like it never happened, a few flooded road yes but many these are known/prone to flooding where the council has done f all to work on drainage since 2010.

i guess its O Cuivs absence already being felt. Cant imagine he'd have left from Furbo all the way to the Islands completely cut off for three days. Even some of the factories around Spiddal/Inverin have shut up shop since Thursday. Not a peep of it in the news and no potential candidate bothering to even bothering to bluster about it.

Utter disgrace. It has ground the entire region to halt worse than any storm ever did with no sign of a fix.

There is nothing that will satisfy all of the people all of the time, it's difficult to see how a more comprehensive system can be put in place. We are such a small country in it's entirety that more precision is theoretical I think.

As a motorsports fan even Formula One with the best of information locally cannot be 100% on weather

granted no system will be bullet proof but the current system businesses suffer as a result especially when they get it wrong regularly, society survived pre 2012.

no, happens frequent enough especially with a storm and high tide. in those instances red warnings not issued. Those in the locality are advised, given sandbags to prepare for the worse. I bet even with the red warning they didn't sandbags this time out.

certain areas are well known/prone to flooding for here the name flood street gives it away, this largely down to council inaction. For galway city the Flood Relief scheme was approved in 2020 after many delays and will at least be a decade for it will be completed.

Even Met Eireann were stating yesterday that the issues would be in West Cork and West Galway.

Bus Eireann managed to work out that buses in the centre and east of the county didn't need to be cancelled, even though there was a red in place.

County based warnings for somewhere as shorth and fat as Galway are mad.
