Is it time to face facts on immigration?

Across the western world people are showing a preference for lower levels of immigration. The US, the UK, Italy, Holland, even here to an extent. Is it time to accept this is for the best and act accordingly? I don't think anyone wants a situation where there is no immigration at all, but everywhere people want it to reduce. Is there scope for a new overarching policy on immigration, which would allow for a limited amount? Can there be a new consensus? Can the ideologues who want almost no barriers and their far right equivalents be seen off by moderates?

Immigration isn't a bad thing though - in many cases required professional migrant workers are an absolute necessity.

Mass unchecked immigration with economic migrants posing as "fleeing war and persecution" - are a problem and that level needs to be, if temporarily at least, zero.
