Morning folks. I don't know many regular posters here do their own spannering, so maybe this thread will die a death, but here goes.

I thought a thread where people could recommend tools, ask questions about the tools needed to complete a job, or just show off their shiny new tools might be a bit of fun.

I'll start off the show, here's a new set of Wera T handled Torx I just got

A lot of the tools i use (Allen Keys, Pliars, Adj. Spanners etc.) are ancient as they were my Dads. I have Park tool cable cutters, internal cable kit, Chain Breaker and the 3 piece utility Pick set. Buy good quality tools once and they'll last a lifetime.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. One of the other recommendations I'd make is that very often, you're better off using a non bike brand for non bike specific tools

Are the newer ones still JIS (dimple on the head)? Or are they the newer DIN that superceded JIS?

Just curious because the Wera Phillips screwdrivers I have are designed to fit the new DIN standard.

@cletus - OP, out of interest.. where'd you buy the Wera stuff? I've got some of their stuff too and have more in my Amazon basket in the (feint) hope they do a better price for Black Friday. Also have the t-bar Park Tool hex tools too.. also in hope. I've told my wife (and now earning kids) that they now know what to get me for Christmas.. some nice Wera tools. They are nice tools and just have a good quality feel to them.

I've bought them from Amazon. I'll caveat that by saying that I used vouchers that I earned through a fitness app to offset more than half the price. It just meant waiting a while.

They're really nice quality, and I've slowly replaced older Draper/Lidl/Aldi tools with Wera. Really, night and day difference

I've made a few tools. Mainly the likes of the item you need to unscrew a recessed ring with two holes in it. In fairness it's mainly* as I have access to a machine shop and I like machining.

*and also obviously it saves me paying €6.99 + €12 shipping to get it!

In terms of bought tools a good quality cable cutters is probably the cycle specific tool number 1 to get and have. I would imagine many people start their bike maintenance "voyage" with changing a brake or gear cable.

The chainwhip tool was a game changer. After skinning basically every knuckle I possess trying to get a cassette off without a chainwhip tool using one is such a joy.

@Peterx I've made a few tools myself, for the same reasons as yours.

Re the cable cutters. I've had a few cheapo jobs, and they've been fine, but I got the Knipex cable cutter, and it's a fantastic piece of kit. Bit pricey, but I don't ever see myself having to replace it

My entire shed is lined with OSB. I didn't bother with pegboard after that, just made up racks/shelves as I needed them

Have a new shed going up. Too many bikes in the house, had a grand little setup but 3 in the house racing and cxing = a lot of bikes and a lot of other paraphernalia.

Any good solutions for hanging bikes? Have had trouble with one hydraulic disc biks, it was suggested that hanging was bad. Maybe this is in the wrong thread

There's no reason why hanging a bike should be bad for hydraulic brakes. It's a closed system. The only way it would affect them is if there was already air in the system, in which case they'd need to be bled anyway.

There's space for 6 bikes top and tailed there. It's never completely full, there's usually at least one bike out and on the go

I've always just used the traditional chain whip, but I've seen such good reviews for the pliers type tool from Park Tool, I decided to have a pre Christmas splurge

I have the Birzman Damselfly. Happy with it. Was a major upgrade from smaller one on a multi tool or the lidl/aldi one i had. Have only used it a handful of times
