2nd hand three router 5g

Firstly, sorry if this is a pretty basic one, but we just moved house and it's the first time I haven't had a line connection to the house. My only option for the short term is mobile 5g broadband. I've been given a used three ZTE router and had a couple of questions:

1. Are these routers locked to three or could a SIM from another network be used?
2. Can you buy a regular pay as you go SIM sign up for mobile package with unlimited data and use this in the router? Or does it need to be a specific mobile data plan?

1. Yes they are generally locked to the network and can be very difficult to get unlocked.
2. Yes, you can use a regular payg sim in the router

My brother uses a Huawei b818 router connected to an external MIMO antenna with a GoMo SIM while he awaits the NBP rollout.

The router is unlocked and can be used with any SIM.

Just did it myself while I was waiting for a line to be installed.

I returned it to a three store after 28days no questions.

1.The ZTE801A i got online(2nd hand) was marked as 3 network, has three logos, but worked with Eir SIM while testing.
