    Hi,

I work in the Civil Service and was considering dropping a grade to allow me move easier.

Will my years of service at the higher grade still count if I drop down.

I.e. would I be bottom of the salary salary scale at the lower grade or would my years of service at the higher grade stand?

    Thanks

I am not sure if it is even possible to drop down a grade by choice. But yes your service should still count.

Nothing stopping the OP from applying for a lower grade role in an open competition.

    Yes, this is possible.

I know a work colleague who got HEO, but this entailed their daily travelling from Fermanagh to Celbridge (instead of just to Cavan town)

After six months they applied to move back to Cavan, and as an EO.

This was achieved within a few months, when a place came available.

Dunno any details of their pay.

They were still in the probation stage of the HEO so in that circumstance you can hand back the promotion and return to your old grade. If you have passed probation I dont think its that easy at all.

Well you can't apply for a lower grade role in an internal or interdepartmental comp but open competition is fine.

If you could link me to that guidance? My understainding is there's no basis for retain any service years at a higher grade unless on reversion during probation

Circular 21/2004 covers incremental credit. There have been a couple of changes by DPER but that's the bones of it. Talk to your local HR as soon as you start in the new grade, I know from experience it can take a very long time to process, but that could just be my HR lol.

Definitely go for it, there's zero harm in asking, and at lower grades it can help a hell of a lot
