Super Game Boy - Accurate Clock Mod

Been a while since I posted any repairs/mods etc here, so said I'd throw up this nice simple one.

The original Super Game Boy isn't clock-accurate with an actual Game Boy, so any games run though it, will run slightly faster than they're supposed to. The Super Game Boy 2 model, which is a Japanese only model, fixes this issue….but the trouble is, I'm not mad on the aesthetics of the SGB 2…it's a clear blue shell, with many of them exhibiting a nasty 'yellowing' of the blue plastic (you can see it darkens). The solution so? Well, the little clock board mod made by qwertmodo, allows the original Super Game Boy to run with a Game Boy accurate clock, so the games will run at their correct speed now.

^^ I grabbed a really cheap but mint condition Super Game Boy from Japan a while back, and now's as good a time as any to test my new Everdrive GB!

^^ The clear Everdrive shell looks neat & inconspicuous in the Super Game Boy.

^^ Ok, the Everdrive isn't much use as is…so I'll need to load it up with my obviously owned & legally dumped carts. I don't want to just throw on a million files though, I'd like some sort of organisation to how I can browse them, so the above isn't going to work for me. *** These are Game Boy Color games which don't work with the SGB, but the process is the same for regular GB games ***

^^ Enter, the Everdrive Packs List Database tool. A software tool that'll scan a source directory (unsorted roms), process a community made database file that tells the tool what way to sort the roms, and then it'll spit out a lovely, well made folder of roms perfect for browsing on a flash cart.

^^ Nice, all sorted as I'd like it, and ready to drop onto the Everdrive SD Card.

^^ Pics aren't great via phone, but you get the idea. It works perfectly, except for the aforementioned issue with the clock speed…let's fix that now…

^^ The mod by qwertymodo, lovely small & neat little board. No faffing about lifting pins etc.

^^ Don't think I'd ever opened one of these before, it's basically a full on Game Boy without the screen as I understand it.

^^ Three components to be removed, R1 (half removed here), R7, & C15 (seen below.)

    1730280930957.jpg

    R7 & C15 still in place here….

R1, R7, & C15 now removed, pads wicked, and cleaned with IPA.

^^ Mod board loosely in position here. The large point at the corner of the chip is an anchor point, and then there's three points to solder…

    ^^ All done.

    1730280930879.jpg

^^ Little test to make sure it's all working, and away we go now at the correct clock speed!

^^ Nice to see the Everdrive allows SGB Enhanced titles to work too, sweet!

    All done!
