    On a JR train in Tokyo, error with the doors at one station meant the train was delayed by maybe 4 minutes, max. Probably closer to 3 and a half. There was a team of staff handing out tokens to passengers as they got off at the next few stops.

    I found out later that night when I showed the token to a barman, they give these out when there's a genuine problem with the trains. They're so reliable, you need a token to prove it wasn't your fault. If you show up late for work or school or an appointment…..they won't accept "the train was delayed" as an excuse without a token.

    This was 15 years ago, about four months before the lad slipped on the ice on RTE news and cracked his head. We are living in the dark ages in this country when it comes to public transport.

    Same trip, went to pay for a ticket to go to a particular station. Couldn't find our stop on the map, as it's all in Japanese, which meant we didn't know how much to pay……..so pressed the 'info' button on one of the machines. Door slid open in the wall beside me and a gentleman stuck his head out, spoke perfect English, showed us what to do. Also showed us how they have an 'open ended' ticket option, if you're ever not sure again. Pay the min fare, get on the train, get off at your stop, use the open ended exit turnstile and it shows how much you need to pay above min fare before it lets you out. Simple stuff, really. We're practically light years behind

    I was kicked off a train at Clontarf the other night because of signalling issues. They put a tweet out 10 minutes earlier saying they were rectified and thats rhe reason why my train departed Connolly. It's a joke, I have many options to get home from Connolly, Clontarf no so much.

    The service has gone to hell since August and we just have to accept it.

    And some of the advice recommendations given in that report I'm fairly sure were previously made at the derailment incident in September 2017 in terms of communication, so the regulator and accident investigation unit can make as many recommendations as it likes, unless they are being implemented by force, then the same old failings will continue to occur.

    Unfortunately it is a culture issue in Irish Rail.

    This country has an attitude that public transport is only for poor people and the quality of that service reflects that. Like mushrooms keep em in the dark and feed them s**t.

    irish rail generally don't do information provision or do it as little as possible.
    when stations were staffed, in a lot of cases staff never actually got information until it was to late or a train arrived or maybe that was just the rosslare line which wouldn't surprise me.
    the suggestion of things being better at the heuston side then at the connolly side in terms of whatever little bit of information provision irish rail do bother to provide is something i could well believe, as that seems to generally be the case in relation to everything as the attitude is, heuston they make an effort for whereas connolly can go to hell.
    well i guess that's the joys of what are really 2 separate disintegrated networks ran by the same company.

    the 2 disintegrated networks now happen to have a service in the form of the phoenix park tunnel service that runs between the 2 networks, a service that was forced upon said company, but said service didn't actually integrate the railway in reality, just happens to run between the networks.

    I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words, nobody has better words then me.

    It’s a pure lucky dip as to whether the PA system actually works or is any way coherent or whether the train staff want to bother communicating. Using trains in wales and England they are much more structured in their communication

    Drivers tend to do announcements but some don't hear it due to having earphones on .

    some people won't hear due to having ear phones on that is true.

    but to be fair the experiences of people here would suggest there is a problem with a lack of announcements or non-working PAS or both.

    either way for whatever reason people aren't getting the information.

    the people with headphones on, well nothing can be done there.
