House Alarm and Wifi

When my House Alarm (HKC) is triggered and reset I lose the internet connection for 20/25 minutes, is this normal?, the alarm system is connected (wired) to the phone system to give alerts but I've never used this facility. I've also noticed that if someone is on the house phone for say 15 mins or so, the same thing, sometimes, but not allways, occurs.

Your phone connection to the alarm is taking priority.

If you had a broadband splitter installed correctly this would not happen when the alarm triggers.

The alarm itself would still seize the phone line to communicate out if triggered.

If you are not using, you can get your installer to disconnect the line from the alarm.

Why does it take 20/25 minutes to restore after resetting the alarm?. I've had it serviced about 2 years ago after 8 years and forgot to mention it to the service guy, I did disconnect it briefly a good few years ago but it flagged a alarm in the control panel so I re connected it.

Probably because, put frankly, FTTC or ADSL broadband is crap. If you’re in a FTTH area I would recommend asking your alarm provider to upgrade you to a digital alarm system and get the broadband sorted as well.

The system, even though you have turned it off, is still trying to dial out on the phone line.

You would need to turn off the line fault indicator in the control panel and remove the line.

In saying that, with the line removed it should still arm.

yes but it will not contact the control centre and if the OP is paying for monitoring (which you’d want to be or the alarm is honestly pointless), then they are at nothing.

Better to request you’re upgraded to a newer system that does not run off the phone line. They’ll need to do it sooner or later anyway because in a few years Open Eir is switching off the copper lines.

I did but inferred that they’ve never had a break in/actual alarm triggered that required the monitoring station to call the Gardaí etc.

a house alarm that doesn’t alert the company to contact you and then the Gardaí if there’s a break in is pointless.

I do have a sort of fiber optic, I don't think its right into my house but gives speeds of I think ~ 30 mbps, using the phone for ~ 15 minutes or so used to cause the internet to drop out but since the installation of the fiber optic this only happens rarely now.

Its the copper cable that the line is on going to the alarm dialer then back to the main telephone point.

The panel itself is only looking for a voltage from the line, which is why you need this disconnected at alarm side and get the line monitor turned off. If not, alarm goes off and the alarm should seize the line as its taking priority.
