Yep there are people on CB but why a lot of People don't hear anything in Ireland is because the freebanders are on the illegal frequencies and those with 40 ch CB won't hear them and those on the freeband won't hear anyone on 40 ch CB so everyone thinks there's no one on 11m, why lads are on Freeband is anyone's guess, I just don't get it.

I'm on 11m most weekends and mostly keep to the legal 11m frequencies.

here's a list of frequencies and channels.

Ireland and most of Europe with exception of U.K are in band D.

    Freebanders are above 27.405.

A lot of Ham radio lads think CB radio is still illegal in Ireland, lol.

I love 11m because I know I'm not going to be heard that far and while I love ham radio rag chews on 80m there are times I just want to talk locally rather than be in a round table with half of Europe.

I'm not sure what the 40 ch calling frequency is but the calling freq on freeband is 27.535 no ?

Might be better to use 535 and whatever the calling freq is for the 40 ch for those with proper CB and not ham radio gear.

Depending where you are I'm in the very southern bit of Kildare at Carlow border. So I'll be on most evenings 40 ch so scan around.

Yeah, you're probably too far for both of us.

It's mad the way it works because I'd have far less hassle having a QSO on CB with 5 watts to U.S than much of Ireland.

Might be time to get an amplifier ? on CB you really need 100w minimum.

Is your President Lincoln the MK I or II ? I think that's 40 watts on SSB ?

I find FM to give clearer audio at times when SSB doesn't cut it and sometimes SSB is that bit better.

An amplifier like this would make a big difference, 40 watt SSB - 200 Watt SSB

What antenna are you using ?

Mine is the Imax 2000 on a 6 foot pole on the Chimney of a bungalow and of course I'm only around 70 meters or 110 ft high which certainly doesn't help with local comms but DX on the IMAX is pretty decent.

You don't need an expensive radio, well, depends what you call expensive, a lot of lads spend a fortune on Ham radio gear to work the freeband as your 40ch can't go up that high in frequency and this is where you'll find the majority of Irish people on 11m sadly, I still just can't understand why they do it when there are 40ch dedicated to 11m legally.

Spending 1k or more on an SDR radio would be insane if someone didn't have a license just for 11m.

So depends on what you want, if you want a radio that can do the freeband and official 11m then a radio like this would be good because most locals will be on freeband.

    https://www.cbshop.com/en/Citizen-Band-CB-Radio/CRT_SS6900V_export-NRC

It tells you on the site how to open the radio so you can transmit above the official 40 ch CB of 27.405 Mhz then you're on freeband until just under 28 Mhz where the 10 M Licensed Ham band starts.

I like the radio in the above link because it looks good vs modern SDR radio with screen and menus.

Get an antenna such as the IMAX 2000 from long communications in the link I posted earlier, that's a good start , put it on a pole on the chimney or on a 10 foot pole on a bracket on the gable end of the house, if it's a bungalow 20 foot pole.

Height is key especially for local communications, if you're on a hill you will get out well vs me down in a hole. I can get out to North America and South America Down to Argentina easier when 11m is open vs talking to someone 30+ miles away in Ireland.

You'll need an amplifier and be careful to turn the radio power down to 1-2 watts or you could kill the amp 200-300 watts should get you out well.
