Recently i stayed at an airbnb, there was an euro to uk plug adaptor left on the bedside locker, also in the room was a fan with an euro plug, that was plugged into a uk socket by the method of pushing a pin of another plug into the top hole, anyway I ended up attaching the adaptor to the fans plug and forgot about it, after i came home i got a message from the host looking for an extra payment of 5€ for the missing bedside adaptor, I told her it's attached to the fan, she said no, there were two adaptors.

Let her make a claim to Airbnb. Maybe she is chancing her arm.

That's what I love about it. You are not paying for non essential things, like breakfast etc.

OP. have Airbnb contacted you with her claim?

Just 'cleaning fees'. And potentially, adapter plugs.

I would state your case to the host then simply ignore any further correspondence from her.

B&B can also stand for Bed & Board, board origionally referred to table…doesn't nessaserily mean food 🤪

Ah now. Bed and Board has always referred to lodgings and food.

It's increasingly common for breakfast not to be included, even at traditional non-air B&Bs.

Just let the Host know the situation when you arrived and how you did not take any adaptor- calmly and without rudeness. Then ignore further communication from them.

If they (Host) do submit a claim, the worse thing you can do is ignore Airbnb, as they will see that as admission of guilt. They will email (claims don’t use messaging like the other customer service side), reply to the email explaining what was there, what you did with the adapter and that you did not take it.

If they do decide to pay the Host, which is likely for such a minimal amount, they won’t charge you as it is under $10. If they do notify you that you will be charged (very unlikely but on the off chance), use the appeal option and again state that you did not take it. The case will then be closed without charging you.

You Can check reviews on airbnb. Its great for simple people who just want a clean place with a bed and shower at the fraction of the cosy of a hotel these days.

Not true, I have stayed in over 30 Airbnbs around the world, I pick ones with a good number of high ratings.

You don't get breakfast but you know that before booking it, also the host is very descriptive how to find and enter the property.

Leave the place as you found it and typically the host gives you a positive review.

Anyone running a business that is trying to charge 5quid for a missing adapter is an absolute amateur imo.

It's a simple cost of doing business. Maybe they should add an extra 50c onto their price so if on average an adapter goes missing ten percent of the time, it'll be covered that way.

Someone running a business this way makes me think it's not a business. If they're scrimping 5quid on something that's a cost of business, I wonder if it was all too tempting to not bother registering with revenue and doing things professionally.

Maybe the host is a newbie to airbnb? Honestly I wouldnt fuss over 5 quid either.

Fair point. I won't fault someone for trying and learning if that is the case.

But an error on the part of the host that just ends up biting their nose to spite their face.

Not only is it a business cost that they should write off, or merely increase their price by 50c to average it out if they really want to be scabby about it.

But it also sets up for an poor, low star review if just starting off. They'd want to learn to pick their battles quickly if they didn't research before entering such a set up.

at the fraction of the cost of a hotel these days.

Off topic, but its not a fraction of the cost of a hotel any more!

The day i first arrived, I messaged a photo of the room to a friend which captured the fan plugged into the wall without an adaptor, unfortunately it's so blurry when zoomed in on the socket, I don't know if it would be good enough evidence for airbnb

And lots of hosts dont charge those ridiculous cleaning fees, especially if you just renting a room in someones home. This type of airbnb experience is often the cheapest option too. A bed, a hot shower and more often than not you are provided with some beverages and snacks.

We got an Airbnb message one time from a house in Kerry - 'I'm missing 3 plates, cups and cutlery'…

    Answer - 'Open the Dishwasher'….

Same guy advertised whole house to yourself - except he was in a room added on to the house !

hope you left a scathing review.

Always stay with established highly rated airbnb hosts.

That's a backwards step and in most cases it is just an attempt by accommodation providers to get more money per bed night.

Since when do the majority of people not want to have something to eat in the morning? The clue is in the meaning of the word/title 'breakfast'...which is breaking the (overnight) fast.

Plenty of times. I always go for room only and look for local cafes for a light breakfast. Why should I pay €10-€15 for a substantial breakfast when all I want is a croissant and cup of coffee?

Thankfully most hotels now offer you room only or room with breakfast.

Justifiably so. Breakfast is now widely available in cafes etc. There is no way a householder could keep up with people's dietary requirements, vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, non lactose, organic etc.

Have you seen the prices of B&Bs recently? They would make a lot of hotels blush. They look ok until you realise its per person……
