Road accident

hi all. Looking for advice. Friend of mine tipped into the back of someone’s car. Hit their hitch in slow moving traffic. All the damage was done to his own. Minimal to the car in from. Couple of bumper clips broke. Older car basically just needs bumper re clipped in.
He agreed he’d sort the bill. But they didn’t want to call the guards and wanted to head off. So with most of the damage to his own car he agreed and exchanged numbers etc.

a week later the bill was €2500. Car was 07 avensis and not in great nick. Obviously looking for a cash pay out so we’re told not a hope.

What rights do they have considering they were the ones to leave without calling guards etc

Garda are not interested in accidents where no one sustained injury.

Did they take any pictures at the time of the accident?

Car is likely a write off…the cost to bring it back to a condition reflecting it pre-crash is worth more than the price of the car. Crumple zones and boot lining could be compromised, the bumper can hide a loot if damage that is beneath after a collision.

One suggestion would be to ask them to get another quote to see what other assessors think the repair will cost. Also your friend should get an inspection done to see what that comes back at.

Let their insurance deal with it at this stage.

it was crawling traffic. Barely moving. Moreso 1/2kph wasn’t an actual crash. A good kick wouid do more damage to the bumper than the actual tip

I was in a similar situation years ago with the same type low speed 5mph accident and virtually no damage to either vehicle, a few scuff marks. They got 15k for a whiplash claim. Let the insurance deal with it is my advice.
