Working from home tax credits - do you need to be named on the bills?

    Hey, simple enough query - I work from home nearly 100% of the time, but I am not currently named on the utility bills (I had to move back in with my parents so they are named). To claim the WFH tax credit would I need to be named on the bills? If I was to change the name on the bills to my own, would that have any material affect on their own payments for fuel allowance and the Household Benefits Package?

    Bill doesn't need to be in your name.

    The amount of relief will be quiet small overall, just to note. Sometimes it isn't worth the hardship to track down the bills and number of days worked from home. And if bill is spilt between a few individuals like you are saying, it could be less than €30 of relief, if even. See the examples on the attached guidance for an idea of potential relief.

    8.3.2 Shared Accommodation

    Section 114A TCA requires the remote worker to have incurred and defrayed
    expenditure on relevant expenses in order to qualify for RWR. However, it is noted
    that scenarios may arise where a bill issues in one person’s name, but it is actually
    paid by two or more people e.g. house sharing.

    In such cases, each individual may include a portion of the relevant utility bill(s) in
    their own RWR claim. The amount each individual can include in his or her claim is
    the relevant amount he or she has actually paid towards the bill. Taxpayers must
    retain proof of payment for any contribution he or she has made towards the cost of
    a shared bill.
