How to get Local Authority to accept you actually own a motorcycle - missing receipt

I have a Honda with Irish reg number (also frame and engine numbers) but no receipt from when purchased by me,

Was bought as a spares machine but now has new clutch and is in running order and I'd like it on the road.

Local Authority say I have to physically take the machine (on a trailer in a van) to a main Honda dealer and get them to certify it is indeed a Honda.

Also to get sworn statement (solicitor) stating the machine belongs to me.

Also a Garda statement that it has not been road used while in my possession.

This all seems a bit over the top and I'd be glad to have any pointers re this.

    Many thanks, Flactem.

Where did you get the bike, and why don’t you have the log book ( registration cert.)?

As I said, it was bought for spares (cash sale) and I had no idea that I'd want to road use it.

No paperwork was (or is) available from the spares seller.

Local Authority have the name of the last registered owner (from many years ago) but won't divulge it.

    Cheers, Flactem

The days of the 'girl in Motor Tax' divulging the details of a previous owners are long gone. From my recollection an application for this information has to be made now under some certain act and only allowed for authorised persons.

Fairly standard all of that in a case of it having no proof of ownership and what make and model the bike is I would think and that it wasn't driven on the roads. It shouldn't cost very much to get the solicitor and bike shop to do what's required and the gardai do that all the time so well used to it.

Don't expect anything from life, just be grateful to be alive.

You don't need the last owners details.

I bought a bike a few years ago from somebody that had never put it in their name or had it on the road. I have done this for a car previously also. So I filled out a SD07856 form and send to:

Department of Transport - Shannon Office

Driver and Vehicle Computer Services Division

    Shannon Town Centre

    Shannon

    Co. Clare V14 P298

    Along with the following:

The reg, Make & Model, Vehicle type(Motorbike), Colour, Chassis number, date of Purchase, detail of how you acquired the vehicle and why there is no log book.

A garage needs to stamp the form to say that the details are correct and the vehicle is what you say it is, they'll verify the chassis number(my local garage did this for me, not a dealer)

A section of the form needs to be signed by a Solicitor/peace commissioner or Commissioner for Oaths, you have to sign the form and witnessed by them if i remember right.

I got the logbook back in my name in a few weeks and all good. If the process has changed then call (0818) 411412 and they'll tell you what you need to do.

Out of interest, what local authority told you that you need all that other stuff?

    Slight thread hijack.

    my local garage

    As in Car garage?

Does it need to be a registered dealer?

I never bothered registering it as off the road. But slowly fixing it up so may need to finally take action.

Previously registered at my parents house, log book missing but found an old motor tax renewal notice.

Yeah, my local car garage filled out that section of the form and stamped it and that did the job! They're not SIMI registered if that's what you mean by a registered dealer? They are a legit garage though.

If the bike you're talking about is in your name, you don't need any of that to get a new logbook, you have to fill out a RF134 form.

If you didn't declare it off the road that means that the roadtax will be due from when it was last taxed. But if its changing owner, the roadtax is only due from the date the ownership changed.

you wouldn't think it over the top if someone was trying to flog off a stolen or cloned bike, so the process does have value.

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I should add that I had to bring the bike to the garage, they had to physically verify the chassis number and make/model.
