Serial to USB?

I've an old win98 laptop, ancient yoke, IBM thinkpad. I want to get some files off it but its only got a serial port. If I get a Serial to USB cable can I transfer to something?

Does it have any PCMCIA or Cardbus slots? It'd be much faster and a lot less fiddly to add even 100mb ethernet to it instead.
