Car Trouble.

    Hi I am writing this on behalf of a friend (she is so good on computers) If I get answers I will send her a link. she and her husband have had problems with their car. To cut a long story short they got the car back from the garage after them fixing it. (Ford Kuga) It went straight in for the NCT where it passed. The next, the whole wheel collapsed while driving home from work! The tie rod arm broke because of corrosion, surely this should of been noticed at the NCT centre. If they had of been on the Motorway or driving fast this could of been really dangerous. Of course they then had to ring the insurance, get a taxi home and so on. What and where do you think they stand re the NCT ?🤔 What would you do if that was your car ? I mean the whole point of an NCT is to make sure its road worthy …..

    Not the NCTS’s responsibility, and rightly they won’t entertain you so don’t even bother. Tell them to get it fixed and count themselves lucky

    I'd be more inclined to take issue with the garage that serviced the car and is supposed to spot these things.

    You don't mention how long between the test and the wheel collapsing but if was soon after the NCT what you're saying is exactly what happened then it should most certainly have been noticed by the NCT mechanic and questions need to be answered.

    You also don't mention what work the garage did so they could really have nothing to do with it.

    The responsibility to suitably maintain the car rests with them. They should have it properly assessed by a competent garage to make sure the rest of it is in order.

    It is an offence to drive a car on a public road which is dangerously defective.

    NCT has a limited scope, it might or might not have been apparent, regardless you are not going to prove it at this stage.

    I know they won't personally answer any questions satisfactorily and will point to the waiver that is signed by each customer before the test but this is (potentially) a very serious issue that was overlooked.

    All those NCT centre's are private business's and despite their insistence they are not responsible, if what is being hinted at is true I've no doubt whatsoever a good solicitor would be happy to take a case against the company.

    They don't make extra money for passing cars, or at least they shouldn't! The corrosion would have to have been visible to the tester, maybe it wasn't visible from under the vehicle. Maybe the trust was painted over. If it had failed on corrosion, you'd likely be back saying the garage didn't report the issue, and the NCT must be making it up. This is a maintenance issue, not an NCT issue.

    I know of a tester tat was passing cars with welded springs after getting a brown envelope the nct finally caught up with him and gave him the road so someone that bought one of his deathtraps must have taken up there claim to the nct.

    Just one more example of why the NCT is a load of balls. They fail you if the euro flag on the car isn’t blue, pass you if they miss a badly corroded tie rod which failed presumably within a couple of weeks of passing the inspection. The mechanics are there to spot exactly this type of problem, yet they consistently fail to do so.

    I've had cars fail for corrosion in the past and my mechanic has pointed to surface rust and in one case, road dirt! No point arguing. Pay the retest fee or wait for the time to expire and go again.

    Can you post a photo of the track rod end? It would take an awful lot of corrosion to break a track rod.
