Ivy from neighbours garden damaging our garden - quote to fix 1100

I have an extension on my house - 18 feet in length. The neighbours ivy keeps growing under our roof - we have to cut it back every 4 weeks in the summer. The outside of our extension wall is 10 inches inside the original boundary fence. We were not able to plaster it at the time because of this - the ivy is starting now to grow up on this wall. The neighbours hedge, the side of which is in our garden, is destroyed with the ivy. The ivy keeps growing through our fence panels and up our back garden wall. I have approached them twice about this and the damage it is doing to my extension and how much effort we have to do to keep it cut back all the time, but both times they have slammed the door in my face. I asked a gardening company if they could do anything and they said they could try and pull the ivy off from the outside wall of the extension but are charging 1100 for this - it's only 18 feet in length - does this quote seem expensive. My other thought was to put week killer on the ivy that is growing inside my part of the original boundary fence. I went to Woodies and they suggested Roundup for tree stumps for Ivy and several applications over a period of months. If this damages the neighbours ivy in their garden, as I presume it can travel back, where does this leave me from a legal perspective.?

Id get another quote. You can only cut what's crossed into your boundary. You can't damage their plants.

Ivy will die if a root is cut. Try get as close to the stem as possible

Roundup pro active 360 or pro vantage 480 is even a stronger version will destroy it !

I would drown it with the stuff!

There's a rumour that a virus is attacking ivy, makes it die back, especially when having been sprayed with Roundup.

Very hard to kill off ivy, cut it as close to the base as possible on your wall, those bits will die then and can be pulled off the wall easily. Trying to trim it when it's at roof level is too much hassle, need to get it before it gets to that height.

I like the spray it option as the neighbour does not care.

If you are cutting back ivy, pull it off the wall right away. If you leave it to die and dry out it is much harder to remove it.

If you can cut it back, paint or spray the cut edges - as soon as it is cut - if necessary slash the remaining stems to expose as much interior wood as possible, then spray.

The quote sounds steep but is probably due to the difficult access.

You said relations with the neighbours are a bit on the cool side.

Things could get a lot worse if you use weedkiller to destroy a plant in their garden without their consent.

They won't know though. All plants die sometime.…

If I had a neighbour who slammed the door in my face and allowed his wild ivy to spread into my garden, I might be inclined to take whatever measures I wished. Anyway, ivy roots itself along its stems and roots and you would need to do a heck of a lot of spraying to kill it past the areas you can reach.

Ivy is the worst. Why anyone would willingly plant it I'll never know.

Start sending them bills for any repair work and professional fees you have to undertake and remember to throw all the cuttings back in to their garden

Roundup. Simple as. They’ve slammed the door in your face twice, I see little point in trying to placate them in this situation.

    Beware of cameras.

Round up and let it drift all over their hedge and anything that is touching the fence, only way to deal with thicks

You do not throw cuttings of any plants overhanging your garden in to the neighbour's. However, you should them to the owner of the planning question. Just throwing debris over a hedge or fence is considered dumping.

Thanks to all of you for your helpful comments. I am going to try and cut it as near to the base as possible for that ivy that is growing in from next door into my side of the dividing original boundary fence. Where do I get Roundup pro active 360 or Roundup Pro Advantage 480 - I have looked this morning and I can't see them for sale in any of the local hardware stores?

Mix the Roundup concentrate with water, 1 part Roundup, 4 parts water and apply with a paint brush to the cut stumps. It is essential that this is done immediately before the stumps start to dry out, within 15 minutes max. If there is room put a few small cuts on the side of the stump and brush in more Roundup mix.
