LG C4 vs G3 (... vs G4)

I think I might already know the answer to this, but it's a wedge of cash so it would be good to just confirm.

Upgrading from a 2017 model LG 55 inch LED.. cost about 500 quid at the time and owes me nothing. Want to treat the family to a much better viewing experience. Mostly watch streaming movies and sport, have UHD subs for Netflix, Now TV etc. Some TV on Freesat/Saorview. Little/no gaming (rarely used PS4).

I've always thought anyone spending 2 grand on a TV is bonkers, but each to their own. I was thinking 1-1.5K, and found my way to the LG C4. But then I saw you have the G3 for about the same price. I've read elsewhere that G3 over C4 is a no brainer, even though the C4 has a chip upgrade etc., would you guys agree?

Of course once I started reading about the G3, I then started reading about the G4, and the reviews saying it's a noticeable improvement on the G3. But is it 500+ quids worth of an improvement compared to the G3 for what I'd be using it for? I'll probably look to get another 7 or 8 years out of it, so would I kick myself if I didn't really push the boat out for a G4, or will I be blown away by the G3 anyway based on what I'm upgrading from?

    Thanks!

    Hi Spockety.

    Thanks for the post.

The G3 would have the better image over the C4 but the G4 is in another league.
We have the G4 on display here in store and there is a noticeable difference compared to any other OLED we put on display.

Don't get me wrong the G3 is still outstanding.
The 55G3 is currently priced at €1448 delivered and includes our VIP 6 year guarantee free of charge. (Stock is mega low on these and once gone there will be no more of these arriving).

The 55G45 (Wall bracket version) is currently priced at €2448 delivered and include a free LG G1 soundbar. Also our VIP 6 year guarantee free of charge.

Or the 55G46 (Pedestal stand version) coming in at €1998 delivered and includes a free LG S60Q soundbar free of charge. Again our VIP 6 year guarantee free of charge.

If you only watch sports and streaming services you'd be better off with a Qled, Samsung have a Neo-Qled called QN90D. Neo-Qled is their way of saying it's a mini Led.

You won't really benefit from the Oled's potential if you're not gaming, that being said it is a better quality TV, I just think you'd be better off with the above. 55" QN90D in soundstore for €1,440

    Disclaimer: I'll be buying the G4 55" in December for €2,100 😂

Thanks for that.. hadn't seen the suggestion before that OLED is really only an advantage if you're gaming.

I wanted to understand more and Google led me here:

    https://www.zdnet.com/home-and-office/home-entertainment/neo-qled-vs-oled-which-technology-is-right-for-you/

It seems to say the opposite.. that gamers should steer towards QLED and movie buffs should steer towards OLED.

Should I buy a Neo QLED or OLED TV?

There are some categories of consumers to whom I would recommend one type over the other:

    • Gamers or sports fans - Neo QLED: The additional available brightness, more common availability of 120Hz refresh rates, and lack of worry about in-game graphics or sports score overlays causing burn-in all point toward Neo QLED being the better choice.
    • Movie buffs and binge-watchers - OLED: If you're building a home cinema around your new TV and want the best contrast ratio and richest colors, OLED is the way to go. Most OLED models shine even more when sticking to the careful color grading of big-budget films and modern prestige TV series.

Qled has higher peak brightness, so it's better in bright rooms, I dont know anybody that games with the light on or the curtains open.

That's about the only thing Qled is better at. Oled has better input lag and response times.

The two points the Qled paragraph mention there are refresh rates, which most if not all modern Oled's have 120Hz,144Hz is only needed for PC gaming, and burn-in, which is romantized in the media as the one bad thing about Oled and doesn't happen with Qled. It doesn't really happen with Oled either, you would have to absolutely abuse the TV over years and years for it to develop a slightly noticeable bit of burn in.

Oled is better, hands down. But for the difference in price and for what your needs are, the Neo Qled will amaze you, if you like watching movies at night, it won't be "as" good, but still better than any TV you've had in the past if you've never owned a Q or Oled

I can't give you any comparisons, but we got the LG G3 about six months ago and I think it's amazing. No idea which is better or worse, but I'm sure you'd be happy with the G3

I got the G3 recently, and it’s fantastic for streaming and sports. I didn’t go for the G4 because the extra cost didn’t seem worth it for my needs, and I don’t feel like I’m missing out.

Thanks for getting back to us Spockety (and thanks for the input everyone!)

If screen burn is something you're worried about while gaming I'd definitely go for one of the Neo QLED Samsungs - the LG OLEDs definitely have better picture quality and motion processing and to be fair with features like automatic pixel shift, screen burn is something we're seeing less and less of in the newer OLED screens, but there's no risk of screen burn with the QLEDs.

The G series TVs are amazing - the big difference was between the G3 and the G2 - the G3 series had an MLA screen which increased the brightness quite significantly over the G2. The G4 has MLA as well and has the upgraded processor over the G3.

If you do have any further queries please don't hesitate to drop us a post!

    Kind regards

    David
