What is the best degreaser for removing dirt, grime, and oil from an engine.

Do you mean outside an engine?

Your elbow grease and a mix of diesel/kero. Sand cast parts try and do them last. I use a mix of brass brushes and a graden sprayer atomiser.

I've also blasted a complete engine but ingress is to be taken v seriously so blanking plates galore. Soda blasting is far less a problem in this regard but provided a poor key so bank on etch priming afterwards.

If it's just cleaning the engine bay and not individual parts - try Elbow grease spray and warm (not boiling) water. Helps if the engine itself is warm. Avoid soaking the likes of the fuse box or alternator. Most of all - do not use a pressure washer at all.

Mainly the sides and back of the engine while still in the car?

I've used Autoglym Engine & Machine Cleaner before with nice results, easy to use, spray on and then agitate with a brush or cloth, then rinse off. I usually take the car for a drive right after rinse off to allow the heat from the engine to dry up anything still damp. I put cling film or plastic covering around the fusebox while cleaning. I'd advise against going down the pressure washer approach as it could cause issues with the cars electrics.
