Punam Rane, a Fine Gael Councillor for Dublin City Council has apologised this morning after saying last night during a debate that the "US economy is ruled by the Jews, by Israel".

It'll be interesting to see if Simon Harris will expell this person from his party after his recent statement on calling out racism where it is. Do her comments reflect a general slide towards more racist attitudes in this country?

Here's a couple of links to the event. Cack-handed mention of the Jews leads on RTÉ (when the word "Israel " or "Zionists" would have made her point clearly without any overtones of "antisemitism") while the journal gives a balanced report on the matter.

DUBLIN CITY COUNCILLORS last night voted to support a motion demanding that the Irish Government enact the Occupied Territories Bill, which would ban trade between Ireland and illegal Israeli settlements in Palestine.

Proposed by Sinn Féin councillor Daithí Doolan, the motion calls on the Government to put forward the legislation “in light of the recent ruling by the International Court of Justice on the illegality of Israeli settlements in Occupied Palestinian Territories”. ... Doolan said: “[This] will insure that we send a clear message to Israel – we are watching you. And make sure it sends a clear message to Palestine – we support you, and there are consequences for Israel if they continue to breach international law.”

Lord Mayor James Geoghegan (FG) said: “I think, unanimously, in this chamber is an expression of solidarity that I think, largely speaking, is reflected in the city of Dublin and across the island of Ireland.”

It will be interesting to see how FG treat her now. If they do nothing, it will seem like they approve of her comments - but if they are overly harsh it could seem that her comments about the USA now also apply in Ireland.

Why is Dublin City Council discussing this issue anyway. They have no influence in foreign affairs. They are a local authority.

Her point is that Israel supporters/zionists control large parts of the US economy, and via this the stance those two political parties take on Palestine and the wider middle east.

The point she made would have been unremarkable if she hadn't used the word "Jews" - but then the Zionist lobby has worked very very hard over the past decade or longer to conflate the words jew, israel and zionist - so please stop clutching your pearls and ask yourself why a slip like this from a person who immediately corrected herself upsets you so.

There's been constant protests by secular Israelis against the Zionists who held sway in the knesset since they got the majority to vote through the declaration of Israel being the Jewish homeland in 2018, which alienates all secular and non religious Israelis.

No, many of them are descendants of Jews who fled Europe because of pogroms against Jews and some other thing that happened only a few generations ago. Maybe, just maybe they identify with the overall idea of a Jewish homeland after all the oppression.
That doesn’t justify Israeli military action, but here’s a crazy idea I’m just throwing out there; maybe they don’t control the US economy but instead are a voting block that politicians play to.

12 months ago today, it was somewhat acceptable to view condemnation of Israel as support for Hamas.

That changed pretty quickly by the end of last year and since then has grown even further and further from being the case.

Israel is currently represented by hateful and murderous leadership and facilitated all too much by many 'stalworths' in the West. What they have done over the last 12 months has done nothing to promote the safety of Israeli or Jewish people.

The poster clearly was referencing Israels actions in recent times and trying to deflect from that by referring to Hamas is hateful and harmful in its own right. And its long time this was called out.
