That jingle is still stuck in my ears

Bring me sunshine In your smile

Bring me laughter All the while

In this world where we live There should be more happiness

So much joy you can give To each brand new bright tomorrow

I can safely say I have never heard background music in a Lidl store, is this a new thing?

I never have either. One of the attractions of Aldi&Lidl is no musak

One of my local Lidls have a kind of 'Hip Hop Lo-Fi Music for Studying' YouTube channel vibe to their music

I tend to enjoy it the odd time

My local Lidls have music, I'm not a fan.

Don't know of the Aldis have it.

My local has musak now! It did not have it a few weeks ago. It is forgettable upbeat musak, I guess to make customers feel good and spend

It's all copyright free content. Not every store has it and not every store that has it plays it all the time

We tried the copyright free musak years ago in our shop. It was absolutely terrible. Got rid of it after a week.

All I ever hear in a Lidl store is "Till number 2 is now closing, till number 2 is now opening". It's a head wreck.

The music is provided by Almotech - same shower responsible for the God awful Dunnes music and many others. Most of their non copyright music is from a company called “epidemic sound”. So hard to know why stores insist on playing this royalty free garbage when absolutely nobody enjoys it.

I know. I'd prefer to shop in silence than put up with the royalty free crap.

Even worse though are the covers - Tesco and B&Q in particular seem to love that instead. Songs that are actually pretty decent but resung by some dodgy band that wouldn't be fit to perform at a wedding. Surely that has to be completely nonsensical as you still have to pay royalties, albeit not the full IMRO rate.

Tesco have a baffling thing on their Christmas lists, an acoustic cover of Tears for Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule The World mixed with jingle bells.

You pay one of the three royalties for those specific covers - just the writing credit payment. No "mechanical copyright" to the label (baffling concept now all these systems are entirely based on files, not physical media) and no performance royalties to PPI.

IMRO/PPI both really try hard to make you buy the Unified licence regardless I believe.

The singers and musicians who contributed to the album of covers probably signed away their performance rights (like models posing for stock photos) so, for the store owner, that music would be cheaper than using the original recordings as the only people entitled to royalties would be the composer(s).

Back in the day, every year at Christmas time there used to be a new album (vinyl LP) in the shops called (e.g.) 'Top of the Pops 1973' which featured unknown singers doing covers of hits from that year. Someone has clearly continued the tradition but the tracks are now being used as background music in stores and elevators.

This schidtty moozak is very successful for my get in, get what's needed, don't browse, get out as quickly as possible shopping experience. Can't stand it, and it should never be loud enough to be conscious of 🙉 Iceland was diabolical for screamers at the high notes; one visit I just put my stuff down and walked out it was so bad and so loud.

    It is what it's.
