Sewers: How do you print your sewing patterns?

I'm just getting started with machine sewing and considering my options for sewing patterns. Except for the traditional option, costs below assume a free digital download pattern:

    • Traditional option: buy pattern in the shop. Cost: about €20
    • Print at home, assemble A4 pages. Cost: Upfront cost of printer, replacement ink/toner. €150+? Perhaps worthwhile if you're going to be printing many patterns or have other uses for the printer.
    • Print (e.g. 33) A4 pages at library and assemble. Cost: 20c/pg = €6.60.
    • Get the A0 pattern pages printed at a shop (e.g. €8 for 2 pages, plus €6 postage = €14). If you can collect it, this is probably the most convenient method with low upfront cost.

What's your preferred way to source sewing patterns?

Was it different when you started out vs when you had more experience?

Does the method chosen have much effect on pattern grading or adjustments?

Or there is another option. if you knew someone like an an architect or signmaker who could draw them out on one piece of paper, and to scale on a plotter.

I pay someone to print A0, I'll only tape if it's tiny or I have a deadline these days. I usually use craftystudio.ie, pretty efficient and nice fabrics too

Where do people find paper old style patterns? is it by ordering online? The last time I made a garment it was by copying the dimensions off a basic tee shirt dress. But I have a lovely piece of fabric bought years ago that I would love to make into a jacket. I am in Dublin and only recently found out that Hickeys on Mary Street is gone 😢

Etsy has old style paper patterns.

Not a pattern retailer, but WM Trimmings on Capel Street might be a good alternative for fabrics, if you're looking for something in the city centre. The guy who's in the fabric department is very experienced and sound, might be able to help you with paper pattern sources too.

Thank your QueensGael. I only recently discovered WM Trimmings having hunted along the quays for old haunts. I wanted some super sized poppers which I found there. I did not realise they did fabrics. Sad to see Hickeys gone. I recently found The Fabric Counter on N Brunswick Street but only for dress fabrics. I was on the hunt for some curtain fabric. I eventually found some in Hickeys out in Carrickmines.
